Title: Leave The Memories Alone. Author: Broni. Rating: PG. Spoilers: Songfic to Fuel’s ‘Leave The Memories Alone’. Disclaimer: Don’t own them. Summary: It’ll never be completely over.
~*~
So here I am with my thoughts of you And this world I’ve left for me Stoic faces when I think of you And how I once believed So now you call me, but you know I won’t let you through I’ve myself to deceive
~*~
He heard the knock at his door and instantly knew that this wasn’t going to go well. Work had finished a little over an hour ago, and not long after Martin left the office, his phone rang. It was Samantha, the one woman who could make him laugh and scream in anger at the same time. They were no longer together, which hurt enough. But now, she wanted to do the exchange.
She was on her way over with some of his belongings. Hers were already in a box on his living room floor. The sooner they got this over and done with, the better. He wasn’t looking forward to it. It was his decision to end their relationship. It wasn’t one that came easily, and he would have hoped she would have known that. But she didn’t understand it.
Why did this have to happen at all? Why couldn’t they just… work it all out?
~*~
So leave the memories alone I don’t want to see The way it is, as to how it used to be Leave the memories alone, don’t change a thing And I’ll hold you here in my memory
~*~
She knocked at the door and he got up, reluctantly opening it. The look on her face told him all he needed to know about how this would go. She looked angry and hurt, still. Her face hadn’t changed in the entire two weeks since he’d broken up with her. So much for a wakeup call. Instead of scaring her, she had now decided to treat him worse. Why?
“Have you got my things?” she questioned, stepping inside and leaving the box on the floor.
“I do,” he replied, “but I want to ask you something first.” She sighed and stood impatiently by the box she realized was hers, not reaching for it just yet but eyeing it cautiously, scouring those items she could see. “Why are you treating me like this?”
A dark smile crossed her face. “You’re kidding, right? You hurt me.”
“Grow up, Sam.” He rolled his eyes out of frustration.
The dark smile fell as she glared at him. “It’s Samantha.”
Martin shrugged. “It’s whatever the hell I want to call you. Why can’t you treat me even a little bit better, even in my own home?”
~*~
So I find me in your garden now A sad smile for the scene And all the flowers that we planted now Taken by the weeds But in my mind’s eye, you know they still bloom for me They stand tall there, in that summer breeze
~*~
Her eyes remained locked on his, surprise and anger now evident. It was good to see that the hurt was gone. She wasn’t the victim in all this. They had such a good time in his apartment. From the time he showed her around and they made love in almost every room, to the lazy Sunday afternoons they’d share sprawled out on his sofa watching movies and baseball.
Where did all of that go? Why did it have to end with them treating each other like children? He thought he was being mature in it all. He told her that he didn’t like her treating him like a leper instead of her lover in public. Instead of trying to make things better and fight for what they had, she let go and did everything she could to avoid him. And that was that.
“Because you don’t deserve to be treated any better,” she retorted. “I’m treating you in the exact same way you treated me.”
~*~
Leave the memories alone I don’t want to see The way it is, as to how it used to be Leave the memories alone, don’t change a thing And I’ll just hold you here in my memory
~*~
“That is bullshit,” he replied, staring at her.
Samantha picked up the box and walked towards the door, rolling her eyes. “Well I’m sorry you feel that way.” She opened the door, but Martin leapt forward and slammed it shut on her. She turned and met his gaze, surprised.
“You’re not sorry about anything.” He stared at her, trying not to let his anger, hurt and betrayal overtake him. “You need to grow up Samantha. You can act like the victim all you want but we both know who’s at fault with all this.”
“You’re the victim?” she scoffed.
He sighed angrily. “I actually loved you! I did everything I could to be there for you and understand you through all those stupid little things that made you complicated. I rarely complained about any of it!” He felt like tearing his hair out. It would be much less painful than finishing this conversation. “You can say all the hurtful things in the world, but they can’t take away the good memories we have made and that I’m desperately trying to hold onto. I won’t let you take them, or make me feel like the bad guy.”
~*~
So leave the memories alone I don’t want to see The way it is, as to how it used to be Leave the memories alone, don’t change a thing And I’ll hold you in my memory
~*~
“You broke up with me!” Her eyes were wide and for the first time, sincere. “It’s not the other way around Martin. I may have caused you pain, but you ended it all. I tried to make it work again, twice, before I went away and when you were finishing up from that case, remember?”
He ran a hand through his hair, still staring at her. “Yeah I remember.” How could he not remember that day? In her eyes it started this whole mess between them.
She nodded weakly. “Then you’ll know that you hurt me. And if it’s all right with you, I’ll feel whatever I want to feel.” With the box in her hands, she turned and was quickly gone from his apartment, and seemingly, his personal life.
~*~
You’ll never change You’ll never change You’ll never change You will never change
~*~
He fell onto the sofa, staring at the box by his feet that she left behind.
Their relationship would never be the same. From the moment he said the words that met her ears and officially ended their relationship, he knew that they wouldn’t be the same. They would never get their friendship back on track, and there would never be any second chances. That was it. Samantha Spade gave you one chance and one chance only.
It tore him up inside that he chose that road. He should have fought harder. Maybe she was right? Maybe he should have tried to be a bit more patient? She did after all tell him she wanted to attend his cousin’s wedding with him, which was that weekend. Maybe he should have let her say that and explain before jumping the gun?
Martin just didn’t know anymore. He shouldn’t feel like it was all his fault, but maybe… maybe it was?
Looking into the box to see what she brought back and if it was all in one piece, he found an envelope sitting delicately on the top of some coffee mugs, a cookbook and his running shoes.
Immediately, Martin knew what the envelope contained. It was the invitation to his cousin’s wedding. He thought he lost it or accidentally threw it out, so he had already called and confirmed that he would be attending. But Samantha had it? Why didn’t she tell him sooner? He couldn’t help but feel that there was a meaning behind this.
So he reached for the envelope and opened it. Pulling out the RSVP card, the ‘yes’ box was ticked, and on the comment line was written delicately in Samantha’s handwriting, Plus one, Samantha Spade, my date. She wrote that.
He sighed and shut his eyes, feeling overwhelming regret and frustration. Some memories would fade too fast, but many would never go away. He wasn’t sure which he was more afraid of.

Aww... great story. It amazes me how you fit so much emotion into this box-exchange! What would usually would be a simple pick up and drop off reveals so much more than was revealed during the breakup or the weeks that followed!
It's hard to pick who's at fault. Needless to say Sam pushed him to the breaking point, but when she finally made an effort to change, Martin didn't give her much of a chance... it's sad. I wish they could've worked it out, but that never would've happened. Things were too complicated and messy there at the end.
Great stuff, Broni! And I love the song choice

OMG, so sad. Whe I got to the part where we find out Sam had filled out the RSVP card to Martin's cousin's wedding... They sure got their signals crossed.

Oh that's so sad! I love the lyrics of the song too, very angsty and totally befitting M/S, esp from Martin's POV. The end was fairly heartbreaking, with the realization that there had been so many misunderstandings between them, but that it was too late to fic things and their relationship was truly over. So sad, but an awesome fic as always. I'm off to read your fluffier one now!

Sam: Hang on. I know this piece of music. I love it. Ainsley: Isn't it great? Sam: No, but there's a reason I like it. Ainsley: Well, it's beautiful. Sam: But there's another reason. Hang on. Ainsley: It's called Air on a G String. Could that be...? Sam: Yes. Thank you.

Another one-off I missed! I love your song fics hun It's so sad but beautifully written. I wish Martin would have given her another chance and Samantha would have been more open about their relationship. I love how she ticked the 'yes' on the RSVP and added herself as 'plus one my date'

So sad, so very sad.
Yes it's true Sam treated Martin badly and he put up with a lot from her. But when he broke up with her, he gave her no oppurtunity to explain herself; to hear if she wanted another chance.
There's blame on both sides and because the break-up is still raw, it's no wonder they're both so angry.
But I think in time they'll realise they BOTH should've fought harder.
Wonderful angsty stuff Broni!
PS The bit about the wedding invitation broke my heart
