CHAP 2
************* Spades' home
Later that night ...
Samantha was in front of her wardrobe, pondering what to wear. She needed to be at her best tonight, if she were to meet the son of the Deputy Director of the FBI. She had asked for more details from her father after her call to Lindsay. This dinner party looked more promising than the two previous ones, she thought. After 20 minutes, she decided to play the classic card and chose a black cocktail dress, that hung closely to each and every one of her curves, and the nice cleavage didn't hurt either. She tied her hair up in a loose bun, letting strands of hair fall on her lovely face. Samantha, even if her behavior didn't clue on it, looked like an angel. She applied light make up and climbed down the stairs to join her family in the living room.
Sam's mom, Diane was sitting on the sofa with her legs crossed. She looked very elegant in her red dress. If asked, Sam would have said she looked sultry and provocative but she wasn't about to share her opinion with her parents. If her father didn't mind letting his wife walk in the streets looking like a slut, she wouldn't mind either. If someone asked the young girl, she would say she didn't look like any of her parents, but truth was, she had her mother's hair and lovely face, while she had her father's eyes. She had his determination too, as well as his quick sense of repartee, and if it was useful for him in politics, it was also a lethal weapon for Sam in high school.
"You look beautiful, Princess," her father told her as he kissed her cheek.
"Thanks Dad."
Every once in a while her father was surprisingly nice to her and even if she was surprised by his gentleness, she enjoyed seeing him like this.
"Come on Spades, let's go."
Sam rolled her eyes. Ok her father was also corny sometimes.
***************** Fitzgeralds' home
Dinner time
John pressed his finger on the bell and the three of them heard the sound ecchoing on the inside. A few seconds later, a woman opened the door and smiled at them. Sam guessed she was Mrs. Fitzgerald and got the confirmation when she spoke.
"Hello. You must be John Spade," she said as she shook John's hand. "I'm Catherine Fitzgerald."
"Nice to meet you Catherine, this is my wife Diane and my daughter Samantha," he said as he presented his family, and Sam could hear his pride in the tone of his voice.
After she shook hands with Diane and Sam, she let them enter and Sam had to admit this house was one of the biggest she had ever seen.
There was a spiral staircase on both sides of the room and a great mezzanine, where a long corridor could be seen. The hall was gigantic and the ceiling was the highest Sam had ever seen. She tried to remain stoïc as she didn't want to appear amazed by her surroundings, even if she was. Mrs Fitzgerald started talking with Diane when they all went in the living room.
A young boy was already there, his back to them as he stared at the fire in the fireplace. Sam's heart began beating faster in her chest. Here was Fitzy Junior, she thought. But just when he was about to turn around, Victor burst into the room and greeted everyone. She saw the shoulders of the young man slump slightly as he heard his father coming in. She frowned. Something must be going on between them.
"Martin, would you say hi to our guests please," Catherine told her son as she ran her hand along his shoulders.
Martin?, Sam thought. Okay talk about a bad start. This wasn't a really cool name. But when he turned around, her smile faded. He was wearing a brown suit that was hiding the blue color of his eyes and his shirt and tie weren't coordinated at all. This guy was a fashion disaster, she thought.
After Martin greeted the Spades, Victor started a conversation about the trouble of finding a parking spot in town and how John was going to solve this when he became Mayor, while Catherine and Diane were exchanging decoration tips. Martin threw a glance at Sam but didn't smile at her. He saw his parents were buried deep in some conversation so he took off quietly and climbed the stairs. Sam looked at him, surprised that he was leaving but since she didn't want to be left alone with the adults, she followed him.
"Hey!" she called after him when she reached the corridor at the top of the stairs.
He turned around and looked at her, surprised. "What do you want?"
"I thought you were suppose to take care of me. At least it's like that in every dinner party I've been to," she told him.
"Yeah but I'm supposed to do a lot of things I'm not always doing," he answered coolly.
"Where are you going?"
"To my room." He stopped in front of a door, his bedroom, Sam assumed.
"Can I come?"
"Why do you want to come with me? I know what kind of girl you are."
"What kind?" she frowned.
"The kind that is after me because I'm my father's son and he's wealthy."
"Okay, I'm not here to marry you, you know. I'm just here because, like you, I'm forced to be here. So I thought we could spend the evening together instead of listening to the stupid conversations our parents are having."
Martin looked at her a little more closely and opened his door. "Whatever," he said, stepping into his room and leaving the door open for her to come in. After she was in she pushed the door but didn't close it completely. She looked around and for the first time tonight, the truth hit her: Fitzy Junior was a geek. He had posters of some bands she hated and about aliens. His room was full of books, and his desk was plastered with the big model of a plane.
"So where are you going to school?" she tried to start a conversation.
He looked up at her with an indescribable expression. "Same as you."
"How.....how do you know where I go?" she stuttered.
"Come on, you're a cheerleader and you're going out with one of the quarterbacks. Everyone knows you. Plus we're in the same class in chemistry."
"We are?" She looked stunned. "But I've never seen you!"
"Doesn't surprise me actually. I'm kind of invisible at school."
Sam looked at him sadly. He wasn't like the ugly nerds that were happy to be different and ignored. First he was really good looking, he just didn't know how to dress himself. And second, he really was sad to be ignored by others. And for a reason she couldn't understand, Sam felt drawn to him. Maybe it was his eyes, they were so blue.
"You know..." she started. "If you tried to speak to people and dress a little bit cooler, I'm sure you'd be accepted."
"You know what? I don't know you and you don't know me. So keep your fashion tips to yourself!" he snapped at her.
She looked stunned for a moment and when he saw her expression, he softened up a bit.
"Look, I'm sorry. It's just that we've been in the same class for the last four years and you never noticed me before. And suddenly, our fathers have to do some business together and you act like you care."
She bit the inside of her cheek, trying not to look at him.
"See? You think you're the first girl who talks to me only because of my father?"
"I'm sorry Fitz... uh Martin."
"Don't bother. It's okay. I'll get over it," he sighed.
They spent the rest of the evening, listening to their parents' stupid conversations but Sam could see it was bothering Martin. He didn't say a single word the whole night. Why did she had the feeling he was waiting for something else than her silence in his room? He said she wasn't the first one who acted like that. And suddenly she felt bad. He was just looking for someone who could like him for himself and not for the fact that he was Victor Fitzgerald's son. Just like she wanted to find someone who didn't judge her for acting the stupid Barbie doll act she was trapped in.
As the evening wore off, the Spades bid their farewells and went home. While Victor and Catherine started to talk about the wonderful evening they had with Diane and John, Martin went up to his room and stared at his ceiling while he released the breath he didn't realize he was holding. He fell asleep in that position with all his clothes on.

Ok, that didn't go so well. It's hard to believe that this geeky, alien lover Martin turns out to be our major hot FBI Martin. Hope Martin and Sam get along better next time.

Yeah! Chapter 2! I really like this alternate universe you've created here. I love nerd boys so the idea that Martin is one is just icing on the cake. I wonder if Sam will take to him at school?
