Chapter 1
~*~
God pregnancy symptoms sucked!
Samantha hated being stuck at home because she couldn’t keep any food down at all. She hated being stuck in their apartment because she couldn’t walk or run without passing out. She was a fighter for god’s sake! She wasn’t supposed to do this! It wasn’t like her and she could just scream it to heaven out of pure despair.
Sighing heavily she looked out the window and leaned back in the couch as she watched the afternoon sun bathing the city in its friendly light.
Her mood was in the loop too.
One minute she was on top of the world, the next minute she was bottom rock, crying her eyes out over some stupid chick flick on TV. It made no sense at all. She had never cried over stupid chick flicks before! But then again – she hadn’t ever slapped Martin before either.
It had been a quick argument over some stupid work detail when she had lost her head and raised an arm, slapping his soft cheek with a loud thud. And then they had just stared at each other, Samantha, covering her mouth and nose with her hands, had been completely astounded and terrified with her own reaction – Martin simply shocked.
She had never felt that stupid or guilty. It was probably the last thing she had ever pictured herself doing; hitting him. It hadn’t even been intentional – she had just got carried away and then her temper and took control and before she knew it she had planted her five fingers in his face.
He had just stared at her blankly as she had lowered her hands, telling him how sorry she was before she had started to cry. And as usual when she would cry, his heart would melt and he would wrap his arms around her, kissing the top of her head and tell her how much he loved her which only caused her to cry harder just because she had become sappy.
Hormones really were strange things.
Suddenly everything was impossible to control – namely her temper. And several people had felt the love. Including Jack – although she still thought that was well earned. She’d had a great morning where she had managed to keep her breakfast down and then he had come in with a really provoking attitude, thinking he could just over rule them and tell them off whenever he felt like it.
And she had just had enough of his button-pushing and I’m-the-boss attitude and had given him a piece of all their minds. Both Martin and Danny had had trouble keeping their laughter from echoing throughout the room.
Since that day Jack had stayed out of her hair. The man had finally learned that he wasn’t to mess with Samantha Spade – especially when she had a pregnant stomach. As Martin had expressed it; it was one of his wisest decisions to date if not the wisest.
Samantha was a dangerous woman – especially when she was packed with hormones!
Samantha sighed to herself; the pregnancy really had changed her. Not only did it make her lose control over her temper – it had her breasts grow to an abnormal large size, had made it absolutely impossible to eat fries without puking and had made it sickening to be around Martin when he had had a beer.
And then of course she couldn’t drink alcohol though she craved it on occasions. Well she craved sex too – at least that she could have. Martin had been very helpful in that department and thinking about his expression when she would wake him up in the middle of the night just for that caused Samantha to smirk.
Yes being pregnant was definitely strange thing.
She could have slept for ten or twelve hours and feel completely awake and then an hour later, suddenly all her energy would disappear in the blink of an eye and she would feel so exhausted she could just bend over her desk and fall asleep. On those occasions, Martin would take her back home to their apartment and put her to bed before pressing a kiss to her forehead and then go back to work.
*
The buzzing sound of a cell phone woke Martin. He had been sitting behind his desk for almost ten hours now, it was dark outside and he was exhausted. It had been such a tiring and uneventful day. And then with Samantha at home and heaps of paperwork waiting for him, it just wasn’t any fun at all. It was enough to make him consider playing hooky.
He wanted to spend time with Samantha at home. Now that they were expecting a baby he wanted to be around her even more. She wasn’t the only one with cravings. It seemed the pregnancy had affected him too – suddenly he craved her all the time. He craved her emotionally – he wouldn’t want to miss a thing.
It seemed his love for her had only grown after she told him they were going to be parents. If he was head over heels for her before it was nothing compared to what he was now but it seemed she rather liked his clinging-ness.
She looked so beautiful. Martin had never really believed or been able to imagine the true meaning behind the famous “glow of a pregnant woman” but seeing Samantha now – he knew exactly what it meant and he had to admit that it was more than true.
She looked so different but it was just so - wow beautiful. Her lips seemed to have a deeper red color than they used to, her skin was smoother, softer and had this color he never thought it would have. And her smile had her eyes shine even brighter. It was a sight any man would kill for – he just knew it. Thankfully this sight belonged to him and no one else. Especially Jack – yuck!
“Martin” her shaking voice could be heard through the phone and immediately Martin sat up straighter, knowing something was wrong. He could just hear it.
“What’s wrong?” He instantly asked, needing answers – NOW.
“I just – I need you, please” she could barely speak and her voice cracked at the last word and it broke his heart to hear the sound of her distant sobbing.
“I’ll be right home – hang in there tight honey” he told her, hanging up as he grabbed his stuff and headed straight out – not even bothering to tell Jack he was leaving for the night. He had been there long enough and if Jack got angry – he would take the fall. To hell with it, Samantha was so much more important.
With his heart in his throat he hailed a cab and got in, constantly having an urge to scream of the driver to go faster. He just wanted to be back at the apartment with her already. He couldn’t help but wonder what had made her call him like this. Had she been in pain? Was it hormones? Or was something wrong?
Paying the driver he stormed up the stairs and unlocked the door, but before he had a chance to look or call for her, he felt her lung at him, wrapping her arms around him, hugging him tight as she just sobbed into his neck.
Instinctively he wrapped his arms around her, kicking the door shut behind them as he walked them a bit further into the apartment, still holding her tight.
“What happened Sam? He spoke, rubbing her back soothingly.
“I just – I dreamt that you,” She sobbed, trying to speak between hiccups, “I dreamt you were shot and died and god Martin it was just so real”
She shook her head, looking up at him with tears strolling down her face. And even then he thought she was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. He could never live without her. Samantha with all her flaws, all her faults and wrong choices in life – he loved it all.
“I’m right here – and nothing happened to me, I’m okay” He reassured her, kissing her forehead softly. “Nothing is going to happen to me – I’m not leaving you and this baby we’re having” he smiled, brushing a hand over her stomach.
“It was just so real – I was just so terrified and that’s when I realized just how much I need you” she said, not easing her grip on him one bit.
“It’s okay Sam – I’m not going anywhere” he whispered, pulling her head back to rest against his chest to help her relax.
“You know what?” He said after a few minutes, merely holding her, rubbing her back soothingly, kissing the top of her head occasionally.
She looked up at him, somewhat calmer now. “I think we need some time off together – what do you say we take a few days off and go somewhere to spend some time together?”
And immediately, a smile spread across her face; “I’d like that” she whispered, leaning up to kiss him, both of them smiling into the slow, soft kiss.
“Right now though,” she smiled as they pulled back, “I would like for us to hit the sheets – I need you tonight”
And with a smirk on both their faces and fingers entwined, they walked to the bedroom, closing the door behind them.
