Aw, little Olivia sure likes Martin, blowing him a kiss; can't blame her though. And neither does Sam... I love that Olivia is a catalyst for Sam & Martin getting closer again and spending time together. LOL at Ava generally not sharing her toys. Looking forward to see how the rest of the evening goes.

Awww it's so soon but already it seems like they're a little family! Looks like Olivia may just be what we need to get MS together... in time though of course, but still, she's a sweetheart. It's good to see the bond that's forming between her and Samantha, though I can only hope that it remains that way through the investigation and Samantha tries to keep an unbiased mind about Olivia's parents.
Great update hun!

I know Jack was only being realistic and trying to point out the pitfalls to Sam, but he didn't have to be so heavy-handed about it.
I know Sam is going by instinct, and it's really early days, but she seems to be doing fine so far. And more importantly, I think she's happy she seems to have a new purpose in life.
Olivia is such a little cutie! She's so attached to the little bear Martin gave her. And she loves Marty! She may be young, but she's smart!
It's wonderful that he's being supportive of Sam, coming over and suggesting a trip to his cousins. I think he's beginning to see Sam in a new light!
Their night at the Tolands has started off well, so let's hope it's an indication of what's to come!
Wonderful updates SamSpade!! Really, really loving this fic!!!

Chapter 10:
And it’s draining all of me Oh they find it hard to believe I’ll be wearing these scars For everyone to see
The weekend had been great with Olivia. Saturday night at the Toland’s with Martin had gone well and he’d invited them to come over another time. Samantha wondered if the invitation would still be there---if Olivia found a new home. The thought of that alone hurt so Samantha did her best to push it aside.
Samantha had called Jack, letting him know she’d be a little late on Monday morning as she needed to take Olivia to the doctor to get her a note to be accepted into the daycare at the FBI Building. Once the doctor had cleared Olivia, Samantha headed over to the office, signing the paperwork before introducing her to the teacher. Samantha was relieved Olivia seemed to fit right in, playing with the toys and interacting with the other kids her age.
She made her way up to her floor, seeing Jack in the bullpen. “Glad you could make it.”
“I called this morning, left you a message that I’d be late.” Samantha frowned, wondering if he hadn’t gotten it.
“I know, I was surprised you came in at all today. It’s good to have you here,” Jack nodded knowing it couldn’t have been easy with Olivia.
“I didn’t know I had a choice,” she laughed nervously wondering what was going through his head. It didn’t matter, she was here and she was going to work. Other people had kids and worked as an agent, it was no different for her.
“New case?” She asked glancing around not seeing anything on the white board.
“No, luckily it’s been quiet though I’m not sure Danny and Vivian would agree.”
“Why’s that?” Samantha frowned not seeing them around.
“They were called in this weekend. Last night to be precise. They handled the investigation so I gave them the day off. Well unless we start needing more man power around here. While it’s quiet, I was thinking now might be a good time for you to go and talk to Lisa.”
“Harris?” Samantha confirmed quite surprised. Her and Martin had discussed it but she hadn’t said anything to Jack. Had he known? Had Martin said something?
“Yeah,” Jack nodded, “I was thinking it might be good for you to speak to Lisa. I mean you’ve got a lot of changes in your life—“
“I’m fine, Jack.” Samantha stared at him, not wanting him to think any different.
“I know you’re fine but you’re taking care of your biological daughter you didn’t know you had. I think it warrants a trip to Lisa.”
“Fine,” Samantha huffed, rolling her eyes and heading down the hallway. She wasn’t really that angry with him. She knew at some point she needed to speak with Lisa but it was easier to blame Jack then to admit she wanted to make an appointment.
Heading down she knocked on Lisa’s door, seeing her shades open knowing she didn’t have anyone in with her. Lisa gestured her to come in.
“Hi, Samantha. Have a seat,” Lisa told her.
“You’re not busy right now?” Samantha was surprised. Usually she had to schedule an appointment.
“I’ve got some time open,” Lisa answered, “so I heard about Olivia.”
“Yeah?” Samantha raised an eye wondering who said anything but knew word was probably traveling all through the Bureau. It didn’t matter. She honestly didn’t care.
Lisa nodded, “how are you doing with looking after her?”
“Well this was the first weekend I had with her. It went well.” Samantha smiled relaxing into the chair.
“What did you both do?” Lisa asked, taking notes.
Samantha briefly wondered if Lisa’s records would end up with Social Services. It was certainly possible if they asked how Olivia was doing in her new home. “Well Friday I took Olivia out shopping. We got her a new bed for her room, a dresser, changing table. She managed to get a bunch of clothes, some toys and books too. My house wasn’t exactly up to standards for having a child around.” Samantha smiled weakly. “I want her to feel at home.”
“That’s nice of you. Did you do anything else the rest of the weekend?” Lisa asked.
“Saturday afternoon we went over to the Tolands’ for dinner and Olivia played well with their little girl.”
“Martin’s family?” Lisa wanted to confirm.
Samantha nodded. “Yeah, he invited us over. We thought it might be good for Olivia to interact with another child.”
“How did that go?” Lisa asked.
“Good. They shared toys nicely and Olivia seemed to like the Turkey dinner.” Samantha laughed, “I think she had a nice time. On Sunday we went to the park and then to the bookstore. I wanted to get her some more stories to read before bed.”
“That was thoughtful of you.”
“Always thinking ahead,” Samantha laughed. “I just want her to feel happy.”
Lisa nodded, “how is she doing with the loss of her parents?”
Sighing she glanced down at her hands, “I’m not sure. During the day she seems okay but at night I have trouble putting her down to bed. Same goes for nap time. Then when she wakes up she cries.”
“A lot of children cry when they wake up. Does she cry after you come in to get her?”
“Not really,” Samantha shook her head. “She seems to settle down if I’m around.”
“That’s perfectly normal for a two year old,” Lisa answered. “How about bedtime? What’s been going on there?”
“She seems as if she doesn’t want to be alone. I can’t blame her, it’s a strange house and it’s only been the first few days. Usually I rub her back, sometimes I sing her a lullaby to get her to sleep.”
“Does that work?” Lisa asked jotting the information down.
“Most times,” Samantha nodded. “I tend to leave her bedroom door open too.”
“Have you thought about getting her a nightlight?” Lisa asked.
“She doesn’t seem afraid of the dark,” Samantha frowned. “I mean I certainly could but I don’t want her to always need the light on though either. I remember when I was a kid I couldn’t sleep without a light on. It becomes harder to break that habit later on in life.”
“Yes but if she needs the light in the meantime, it’s a habit later you can deal with breaking. It’s not like it’s a drug habit,” Lisa smiled, “it’s just a nightlight.”
“I know,” Samantha nodded. “I’d do anything to make her happy.”
“How has she been regarding her parents death?” Lisa asked.
“I don’t know, I’m not sure how to explain it to her. She’s two, you know?” Samantha frowned. “I mean I don’t want to lie and tell her they’ll be back. She asked the other day and I think the look on my face told her.”
“You need to tell her in words, Sam. It’s hard and painful but she needs to hear it from you.”
“What do I say?” Samantha felt nervous, “I don’t want to upset her, Lisa.”
“She’s going to be upset. She’s going to cry. She’s two and she probably won’t understand their death and you’re not expected to tell her they were murdered but I think it’s safe that you explain that they’re gone and in heaven.”
Samantha nodded weakly, “I hadn’t thought about that.” She wasn’t exactly one that was religious and wasn’t sure what she believed when it came to faith but telling a child her parents had gone to heaven couldn’t be that bad, could it? It would give her hope and certainly explain what she hadn’t been able to.
“Well if you’d like, you can always bring her in to meet with me,” Lisa offered. “My door is open and though she might not talk now, eventually she will. Besides there’s other methods of therapy I can use to communicate with her.”
Samantha smiled, “I might do that.” She knew it would probably help Olivia. It certainly wouldn’t hurt. Glancing at her watch she knew she’d kept Lisa for awhile and needed to get back to the office. “Can I set up an appointment for next week to see you again? Keep things current?”
“That would be a good idea,” Lisa nodded. “If you want me to see Olivia before then, just let me know, I’ll find the time.”
Samantha stood up, quite relieved, “thanks Lisa.”

I know Sam likes to protest when Jack mentions going to see Lisa, but it is soooooo good for her! And once she's there (at least in this story) she opens up quite nicely. I'm anxious to learn what happened with Olivia's parents and how keeping Olivia changes Sam (& Martin for that matter!).

I knew Sam would find talking to Lisa a good thing. She always has a solution to any problem, and gives good advice.
I think Sam is doing great so far, and Olivia seems to trust her. I hope that won't change when Sam explains why her parents aren't around any more. She should bring Olivia to see Lisa too - it certainly wouldn't do any harm.
I am completely hooked on this fic SamSpade and am really eager to see where it goes!
Great update!!!

I'm glad Sam went to see Lisa somewhat voluntarily and that everything is going good with Olivia. Maybe after a little more time with Sam she'll adjust a little more and be able to sleep more soundly.
Great update.

I am very glad Sam & Olivia had a really good time at the Toland's, not that I doubted they would.
In my opinion it's a very good thing Sam speaks with Lisa, not only about her feelings about all that has happened in the past several days, but also for Olivia. Lisa is right, that Olivia needs to be told the truth about her parents. - In a way that is appropriate for a child her age, just like Lisa suggested. Secrets and lies in families about such essentially important facts are never good and will cause more harm than anything some time in the future. And then children lose their trust in those they have depended on most (parents, or in this case Sam).
Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for Olivia to see Lisa for a time as well. As a professional Lisa has a distance that Sam can never have, she felt connected to Olivia before she even know she was her biological daughter. Lisa will look at things from a different angle and that won't hurt, only help Olivia and Sam, by knowing all is well with her little girl and she has done everything to assure it will continue to be.

Wow, Jack actually had a good idea about Samantha's private life! Give the man a gold star and a smiley face stamp I'm glad she did speak to Lisa and they talked about Olivia (of course), but it wasn't only about the shock of it and the case and all, but how Olivia was doing coping after her parents death and how Samantha's coping looking after her. Lisa's such a good influence on Samantha and I hope both Sam and Olivia continue to see her. It'll do them both a hella good!

Chapter 11:
I don’t care what they say I’m in love with you They try to pull me away But they don’t know the truth My heart’s crippled by the vein That I keep on closing (ooh) You cut me open and I
Each day seemed to pass by more quickly. It hadn’t been easy at first, explaining to Olivia about her parents but Lisa was right, she had to be honest with the little girl, explain what she could without giving her nightmares. Olivia hadn’t taken well to the news and after a few visits with Lisa it became pretty obvious just loving her, showing her how much you care would be enough to fill the empty hole in her heart.
Samantha sat on the sofa, curled up with Olivia in her arms as they watched The Incredibles for the umpteenth time.
Olivia couldn’t stop laughing, pointing at the television and making faces as if the television would respond to her. Samantha was incredibly relieved that Olivia had taken well to her, had grown to trust her.
“Sam,” Olivia glanced up at Samantha with a smile.
“Yes, sweetie?” She smiled down, tickling Olivia’s tummy watching her squirm in her arms.
“Pop-orn,” she tried saying ‘popcorn’ but sometimes the letters came out a bit jumbled.
“Popcorn,” Samantha gently corrected Olivia, “you want me to make some?” Olivia nodded enthusiastically, moving off Samantha’s lap letting her get up to make some popcorn for the movie. “I won’t be long,” Samantha assured her, heading into the kitchen and finding the hot air popper.
Once she’d put the popcorn in, she heard the door and frowned wondering who would be coming by on a Sunday night. Olivia jumped off the sofa, running to the door, “let me get it.” Samantha reminded Olivia, not wanting her to let any random stranger inside. Glancing through the peephole, she was quite surprised to see Martin on the other side of the door.
Pulling it back she smiled, “hey what are you doing here?”
“Do you mind if I come in?” Martin asked, watching Olivia bouncing up and down.
“Sure,” Samantha nodded stepping aside, “I was just going to put on some popcorn. You can come in the kitchen, talk there?” Martin wasn’t one to just show up unannounced. They hadn’t really seen each other outside of work in nearly two months. That’s how long Olivia had been staying with Samantha—well to be precise 10 weeks.
“Yeah, we should talk in private.” He stared at her, watching Olivia run off to the living room to watch her movie.
“Okay,” she stared at him, her stomach in knots. “What’s going on Martin?”
“I got a call this morning from NYPD. I’m not sure why they contacted me first, maybe because I’m on call this weekend,” Martin shook his head, it didn’t matter. He needed to get right to the point. “Olivia has an Uncle in West Virginia.”
“Oh, I see,” she tried not to let her heart break at hearing she had other family, that soon Samantha would have to part ways with her daughter.
“I know,” Martin nodded, staring at her, seeing the look on her face. “Someone needs to drive out there this week, speak with him face-to-face about Olivia and her family.”
“I’ll do it,” Samantha wasn’t sure she wanted to but she also wanted to make sure the transition went smoothly. She didn’t want to just dump Olivia off with someone she didn’t remember or know!
“You should probably leave Olivia with someone here while you go. Or make a day trip of it and keep her in the daycare,” Martin shrugged, “I just—I think for the initial visit you shouldn’t bring her along. It might only further confuse her.”
“You’re right,” Samantha nodded. She didn’t want to part ways and say goodbye to Olivia. She could certainly fight for custody, being her biological mother but she wasn’t sure if she could win that case. She had afterall signed her rights away before Olivia was conceived. Maybe that would be enough to overturn the ruling, she hadn’t actually met Olivia, and a mother that chooses to give up their child for adoption has a small span after giving birth to change their mind. Shouldn’t she have that too?
“Just relax, try not to get too worked up,” Martin rested a hand on her arm, seeing the look on her face, the sheer panic and fear. “It’ll be okay, Sam.”
“I don’t see how it’ll be okay,” she shook her head letting out a heavy sigh, collecting her thoughts. “I’ll be professional on Monday, I’ll meet with her Uncle and we’ll work something out.”
“I know you’ll be professional, Sam. You always are,” he nodded staring at her, “do you want me to come with you?”
“There’s no need. It’s a short flight and I’ll be back in time to pick Olivia up in the evening,” Samantha breathed, chewing on her bottom lip. This was not what she imagined. She thought the most difficult times had passed but suddenly she felt as though they were being thrown right back at her. “Does Jack know?”
“I called him,” Martin admitted, “just to give him a heads up. I thought you might not make it into work on Monday.” Staring at her, his hand moved down to hers, their fingers intwining together. “Listen, if you need a recommendation, for custody, I’d be happy to help in any way I can. I’ve seen the way you are with Olivia and---“
“It’s fine, Martin,” she shook her head no. “Olivia belongs with her family. If I can give her that, I’ll be happy.”
Martin stared at her, knowing she was lying and that deep down she was hurting inside. In truth hearing that phone call had been quite unsettling to him but he’d pushed those thoughts aside and did what he had to. This was his job. “Well if you need anything, even to talk, I’m here, Sam.” He suddenly wished the last two months he hadn’t kept such a distance. Having her over Jamie’s had been great except his family kept asking why they weren’t dating anymore, that clearly she had changed. Martin wasn’t sure what to think, to believe, to feel. He wanted some space and wanted Samantha to get the time to bond with Olivia, grow together, and connect. If he was there, he’d be taking something away from that. “I should go,” he breathed glancing at Olivia. “Don’t burn the popcorn, Sam.”
“Yeah,” she smiled weakly knowing it was fool-proof.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” her heart was in a million pieces and she was already grieving even though Olivia was still there, sitting on her sofa watching her favorite movie over and over again. How was she going to survive?

Wow, another twist in the maze. Well I certainly hope Samantha keeps in professional mode when she meets with the uncle, and if that doesn't work too well, go all out and kick his ass (if he's a jerk or slime anyway). Olivia should be with family she knows but it's hard because she and Samantha have formed such a close bond in the past two months and a bit. It will be incredibly difficult meeting with the uncle but I'm glad Samantha's doing it. Another step forward!

Well, I can't say I'm thrilled that Olivia has an uncle in Virginia, but they were bound to find a relative somewhere, sometime. Maybe Sam should've let Martin go with her. This whole situation is going to be a lot for her to deal with on her own, and he would've been able to help in case things got less than professional.
Oh well, hopefully Sam will be able to go down there and see the uncle without causing a rucus or anything. But who knows?! Maybe the uncle won't want to keep Olivia and Sam will end up getting full custody. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Great update ;D

Oh crap! I was afraid something like this would happen. Sam and Olivia have gotten so attached to each other, and no matter what she says, this is going to be more difficult for Sam than she can imagine.
I'm with the others - I hope the uncle is a child-hating, drunken layabout with no money and no job. (Think that might be enough to persuade Social Services to leave Olivia with Sam?)
I am anxiously waiting the next update SamSpade - Olivia and Sam's fate is hanging in the balance!!!!

Chapter 12:
Keep bleeding (ah ah) Keep, keep bleeding love I keep bleeding I keep, keep bleeding love (ooh ooh) Keep bleeding (oh ooh ooh) Keep, keep bleeding love (love) (Oh) you cut me open and I
Samantha didn’t bother to explain anything to Olivia yet. She’d wait until she met Alan Morgan and then she’d figure it out. Truth was, Samantha knew she was stalling. A tiny part of her considered taking Olivia out of the country with her, escaping somewhere so that she and only she could be her parent.
She wouldn’t do that though. She worked for the Missing Persons Unit, the last thing she was going to do was intentionally become a case. Samantha dropped Olivia off at the daycare downstairs in the Federal Building and then booked her flight. She said hello and rather quickly goodbye to Jack, letting him know she’d be out the day. He didn’t really say much, unsure what to say. It seemed or felt as though the team was being extra careful.
“I’m not fragile you know,” she glanced at Jack on her way out.
“We’re just worried,” he shook his head knowing this wasn’t going to be easy on her. She always had a strong connection with missing children and cases. The fact her own biological daughter she’d come to find and now had to relinquish custody was not going to be easy. No matter how many times he heard ‘I’m Fine’ from her lips, he knew the truth. They all did. They all felt that connection she shared with Olivia. Samantha’s world had brightened up the last two months, having a daughter had changed her, there was no doubt in his mind.
Samantha didn’t answer him, she grabbed her ticket that she’d printed out from the computer and headed for the elevator. She didn’t want to be late or chance missing her flight. Her nerves were already on end and the last thing she wanted was to give herself an excuse as to why she didn’t make it to Alan Morgan’s home. That wasn’t an option. This was her job and she had to do it.
Finally arriving in West Virginia, she had quite a drive from the airport, up through the mountains. The scenery was gorgeous but she couldn’t help but wonder what the schools in such a rural area would be like. She wanted the best for Olivia but knew it wasn’t her decision to make. She’d fight for it though, if she had to, she’d fight for it.
Samantha followed the directions, winding up the off-beaten path and driving until she saw a mailbox poking its way between the trees. She turned down the driveway, or what she could make of one. It was a small cut-out path and her rental barely fit but she seemed to make it through.
She wondered what kind of people lived out in such a rural area. She certainly growing up had lived in Kenosha, not the most populated town but there was civilization nearby. A few hours drive was Milwaukee and in the other direction Chicago. There were places to go and things to do, just not right around the corner. Here though, Samantha wondered how long it’d take to find a grocery store—an hour? It would at least take that long.
Stepping out from the car, she pulled her badge from her pocket letting out a heavy sigh as she trudged up through the leaves and to the front door, knocking hard. The house was old and run down. The porch had an old wooden rocker that was quite weathered and the wood was peeling. The house didn’t look much better. She wondered if someone couldn’t care for a house, how could they for a child? Of course one was nothing like the other. She had to think positive, she had to.
The door creaked open and Samantha could smell old stale smoke from cigarettes. She suppressed the urge to cough as it overwhelmed her. “Hi, Alan Morgan. My name is Samantha Spade, I’m with the FBI.”
“I ain’t interested,” Alan answered staring at her. “I keep to myself and that’s all there is to it.” He moved to shut the door and Samantha put her hand on it and her foot in the way.
“I’m here about your brother Ryan and his wife Sarah.” Samantha started, hoping he’d ease up.
“Yeah, what about em’?” He loosened his hold on the door.
“Can I come in?” Samantha asked.
“Suit yourself,” he shrugged leaving the door open and walking into his living room letting her follow.
Samantha glanced around, seeing piles of papers, dirty dishes in the sink, clothes strewn about. Samantha wasn’t the most tidy person but Alan was by far a slob. It didn’t matter though, she couldn’t think of it like that. “I’m here because Sarah and Ryan were both murdered.”
“Oh,” Alan nodded slowly, “what happened? did you catch the guy?”
“We’re not sure. Olivia survived but she didn’t exactly give us much to go on.” Samantha smiled weakly. Maybe Alan wasn’t as bad as he seemed? Looks could be deceiving, right?
“That’s why you’re here?” Alan guessed, “I’m the next of kin?”
“There wasn’t a will,” Samantha shook her head, “you are the closest living relative to her parents.”
“Yeah well I’m not interested in little girls,” Alan shook his head, “it’s the boys that I prefer.”
“Excuse me,” Samantha’s eyes widened and her mouth dropped. Her stomach knotted and instantly she felt sick. She felt the hairs on her arm go up and inwardly shuttered.
“You heard me blondie,” Alan laughed, “I don’t take well to little girls. They cry too much.”
“So you’re waiving your right to custody?” If he didn’t she’d certainly fight him for it. My god why didn’t she go in with a tape recorder!
“I don’t want her. Consider it waived,” Alan shook his hand through the air. “You can have her for all I care. Just don’t bring her around here.”
Samantha nodded, there was no way in hell she’d let Alan Morgan near Olivia. She’d die first trying to keep him away. “Well I’m sorry for wasting your time,” Samantha stood up, wanting to get out of his home. He was definitely creepy. It was no wonder he lived in such an isolated area. It screamed pedophile but she knew not everyone that lived there had to be bad. He just happened to be the perfect example of psycho.
She stepped out, hearing the door shut behind her and shuttered as she reached into her pocket for the keys. Her hands were shaking as she attempted to unlock the door. Her heart was pounding and she finally managed to get the door unlocked and open. Sitting down in the car, her bottom lip was trembling and she bit it hard feeling blood but not caring. She could not cry, not right now, not here where this creep could still see her. Locking her doors she carefully backed out of the driveway and onto the off-beaten path back down the mountain.
She knew she should be feeling better, relieved beyond anything that Olivia would remain in her custody but right now, she felt sick. She needed a hot shower and a fresh change of clothes. She’d have to catch the flight back to New York first, clear things up at the office and pick up Olivia before she could get cleaned up.
