Aww, great update. Martin is so understanding about how Sam is. He seems like he wants to be friends or more than friends with her and wants her to meet their son, get to know him.
Can't wait for more. ;D

Chapter 3:
Yeah we talk for hours, you still wanna listen
“Free for lunch?” Samantha managed to corner Martin, not letting him give any excuses. She’d barely slept the previous night, tossing and turning, thinking about the photo of Noah, the fact Martin was here now and would be likely for a long time. It kept her up late, unable to fall into a deep sleep until the early hours of the morning.
“I think so,” Martin nodded, seeing the dark circles under her eyes. He knew at some point they’d need to talk but right now, he wasn’t even sure what to say. They had to start somewhere though, lunch was as good a place as any. He stood up, following her to the elevator. Together they walked down the road, making their way into a deli. Martin let Samantha order first, unsure what he wanted, having a good look at the menu before finally figuring it out.
They took their meals and sat down across from each other at a small table. “So,” she smiled weakly feeling the mood slightly awkward and wanting to break the tension any way possible. She knew it was because of Noah, even without discussing it, the tension hung in the air. “How are you liking the new job?”
Martin took a bite of his sandwich before glancing up at her, waiting a moment to swallow it. “It’s good. Tiring but good.” He stared at her, offering a soft smile, seeing a worried look on her face. “How have you been?”
“Busy with work,” Samantha shrugged. It was what she’d told him last night. Nothing had changed. Feeling his eyes on her, it was making her slightly nervous. “How’s uh, Noah been?” Her tongue darted out, licking her dry lips before reaching for her soda. She needed something in her hands to keep them from shaking right now.
The biggest smile spread across Martin’s face at the mention of his son. “He’s great. Amazing in fact. He’s growing so much everyday. Sometimes I can’t believe he’s three. One day he was babbling and suddenly he’s talking full sentences. He’s so energetic too. Loves running around, he’s great at throwing a ball, and loves beyond almost anything else, story time.” Martin smiled.
“He sounds really great,” Samantha breathed with a weak smile. A part of her couldn’t help but feel jealous but it was her own fault. She’d done it to herself. She wasn’t ready for a kid. Besides, Martin seemed to make a great father, Noah was lucky to have him. Samantha glanced at her sandwich, having a bite, trying to distract herself. “Why’d you move to New York?”
“Family is the main reason. With Noah getting older, I thought it’d be nicer to have some family nearby. My cousins live not too far from the city. About an hours drive or so.”
“I didn’t know you had family in New York,” Samantha stared at him with a faint smile.
“Yeah, we’ve always been close and I figured it would do Noah some good to grow up around his cousins. Besides my cousin Jamie is pregnant with her first child,” Martin admitted. “I figured now is as good a time as any to move. Especially before he starts kindergarten.”
“That’s smart,” Samantha nodded. “It’s easier for him to adjust now before he makes a lot of friends.”
“Exactly,” Martin nodded staring at her. “Maybe sometime you’ll come by, I’ll introduce you to them.”
“Yeah?” Samantha felt her breath catch in her throat, surprised he’d consider seeing her outside of work.
“Sure,” Martin smiled, “you can relax, Samantha.”
“Easier said than done,” she laughed nervously staring down at the table. “I really never expected to see you again, Martin.”
“Maybe I should have called before I took the transfer,” he admitted. It wasn’t as though he didn’t have her phone number buried in his bedroom. Calling her never seemed like an appropriate thing to do. They weren’t really friends. Maybe he wanted to be but they lived on opposite sides of the country, led their own lives, had their own jobs. It didn’t seem like it would last.
“I probably wouldn’t have answered it,” Samantha confessed with a weak smile glancing up at him. She couldn’t help but nibble on her bottom lip. “Seeing you again, it’s thrown everything off.”
“What do you mean?” Martin frowned, sighing softly seeing her upset.
“I thought I knew what I wanted. I thought I had everything figured out, dealt with---now, I don’t know.” She felt her voice crack and pinched the bridge of her nose to keep her emotions at bay.
“I’m sorry, Samantha.” The last thing he ever meant to do was hurt her. “Do you want me to transfer to another division in New York?”
“No,” Samantha shook her head, “don’t be ridiculous. You’re here, the team likes you. You’re good at what you do,” she’d only seen him working a day and a half but she was certain he was a good agent.
“Then what are we going to do about us? About the past?” He stared at her, letting her think it over.
“Is there anything to do?” She frowned glancing up at him, feeling worry lines across her brow. “We can work at being friends?” She had no idea what he was looking for let alone what she wanted herself out of all this. Her mind felt as though it were in a fog. Getting less than three hours sleep probably was partly to blame.
“I’d like to think we already are friends,” he smiled weakly knowing they had a long way to go but wanting to get there, to think of her as a friend. He watched her open her mouth, about to say something but quickly shut it. “What is it?” He asked, smiling, “I’ve never seen you tongue-tied.”
“This isn’t easy for me,” she whispered, staring down at her food, no longer hungry. She felt his hand come to rest on her arm.
“I know, Samantha and if there’s anything I can do---“ he stared at her sincerely. She’d given him a child, the best gift he could have ever asked for. The least he could do was try and be there for her, even if he was the one causing her confusion. Feeling his phone vibrating he pulled it out of his pocket. “Agent Fitzgerald,” he answered it, hearing Jack’s voice on the other end. A moment later he hung up. “Seems I’m being called back into the office,” he smiled weakly knowing she probably was relieved to be alone for a few minutes. “I’ll see you when you’re finished your lunch.” He could tell she hadn’t eaten much.
Samantha stared at him, her eyes heavy and tired. She hoped Jack would call Vivian or Danny before bothering her right now. She needed a few minutes to figure things out, try and calm herself down enough to eat her lunch. She watched him stand up, shoving his phone into his pocket. Leaning down he planted a soft kiss to her lips. Her eyes closed, surprised by the gesture but not pushing him away either. She was too tired and the kiss was gentle and quite soothing. Feeling him pull away, her eyes opened seeing his staring down at her. “Feel better and try and get some sleep tonight, okay?”
“Is it that obvious?” She laughed weakly still feeling as though his lips were on hers. Her tongue darted out, moving over her lips watching him intently.
“I’ve seen you with little sleep, so to me, yeah.” He nodded with a smile seeing her cheeks blush. “I’ll catch you later.” He threw away his trash and made his way back out towards work.

Up to Ch. 2 this time. I really enjoy that Martin & Sam are trying to really talk. Loved to find out about how Martin felt when he first met Sam and how he knew he couldn't voice those feelings not to scare her or freak her out.
I do so hope with the way they are going now they can build a real friendship and much more...

Great update! I love Martin in this fic almost more than I do on the show. He's so patient and understanding with her and apparently still smitten with her. Sam probably expected him to be distant with her, but he's really embracing her and wanting her to be a part of his life. He's so sweet! And a kiss too!! I don't know if that would calm her down or make her an even bigger jumble of nerves. Haha. Can't wait for more!!

How do you come up with them SamSpade? Another terrific scenario, a fic I absolutely love already, and only three chapters in!
Sam is obviously shocked to have Martin (and Noah) in New York, and Martin working with her. It's obvious there are still feelings on both sides, so it's going to be interesting to see what they decide to do about their relationship. I wonder how long it'll take for Martin to let Sam meet Noah?
Ah!! Questions! Questions! Thanks SamSpade for regular updates - hopefully our questions will be answered soon!!

Chapter 4:
I'm used to opening my own doors and splitting the checks
It had been a week since she’d felt his lips brush hers. She still couldn’t believe Martin had kissed her at lunch. She didn’t know what was running through his mind in doing it and as tempted as she was to ask him, she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She honestly wasn’t sure she was ready to hear the answer. Was he looking for a relationship with her? Did he want her around so they could be one big happy family? She still wasn’t ready for that. She felt connected to Martin, there would always be that bond, after sharing a son with him but a family---it still seemed so far off.
“The new guys late?” Danny glanced at Samantha, wondering if she knew what was going on. He still hadn’t learned where Samantha and Martin knew each other from but was beginning to see something going on between them. He wasn’t an idiot.
“Seems he is,” Samantha shrugged not wanting to make a big deal of it. Martin probably overslept or something. Besides he wasn’t her responsibility to figure out where he was and what he was doing.
“You know if I were late,” Danny shook his head, knowing Jack wouldn’t accept it and it seemed as though Martin were getting special treatment. He wasn’t happy about it. Being the Deputy Directors son was one thing but using it for special treatment, he couldn’t stand people like that!
“I’m sure he has a good excuse,” Samantha glanced at Danny, “if not, he’ll face Jack like the rest of us.” She knew Martin well enough to figure that he wasn’t trying to break the rules. He was a good agent, something probably came up.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Danny rolled his eyes, not believing it. He scooted over towards her desk. “You still haven’t told me how you two know each other.”
“It was a work thing,” Samantha gestured towards the mound of paperwork on her desk, as if that explained everything.
“A case?” Danny guessed, frowning, “Jack seemed surprised that you two knew each other. If he was another agent working the investigation, it would have been in your report.” Danny knew that much. Besides it was likely Jack and Martin would have had some contact with one another.
“Maybe it got left out?” She really didn’t want to be discussing this with Danny, of all people.
“Nice excuse,” Danny shook his head. “So really, what’s going on with you and the new guy?”
Samantha stared at Danny, “absolutely nothing.” She wanted to make it clear, there was nothing going on.
“Okay,” Danny nodded, sensing something but letting it drop---for now. “What do you know about his kid?” He’d caught her staring at the photo as she’d been walking by Martin’s desk on more than one occasion. He was a cute kid, no doubt about it, but Samantha seemed in a daze lately. Was she thinking about wanting a family of her own? It was no secret she hadn’t been doing well in the dating department.
“Noah?” Samantha shrugged, “I’ve never met him. He seems like a cute kid from the photos.”
Danny stared at her, raising an eye and nodding. “He does. How old do you think he is?”
“I’d guess two or three,” she didn’t really want to be talking with Danny about Noah. “Listen, if you want to ask Martin about his son, fine,” she shook her head, “but I don’t know why you find it necessary to ask me twenty questions about a kid I’ve never met and a man I barely know.”
Danny was taken aback by her tone, wondering why she was being so protective of someone she claimed to barely know. His eyes watched hers, reading her, knowing there was something else. He wasn’t going to let up so easily. “Come on, you’re not going to tell me how you met? Was it at a club? A singles meetup? Over the internet?” He had endless scenarios popping up in his head, wanting to know what was going on.
“I already told you, it was on a case.” It was all she was giving Danny. Besides she couldn’t even remember the case or the investigation. It had been a blur after meeting Martin.
“Fine, what case.” Danny stared at her. “When were you sent to Seattle?” He couldn’t remember a time that she’d been sent on an investigation but she’d been working Missing Persons longer and he didn’t know how long ago they’d met.
“I’m not going to talk about it Danny.” She made it clear as possible to him.
Danny sighed, continuing to stare at her. “A few years ago you took some sick leave.” He never understood why or what happened. He couldn’t really remember when, just that she’d been gone for a few months or so and a temporary agent stepped in until she returned. He assumed it had to do with a case having gotten to her and needing to clear her head. It happened to the best of them and he never asked her about it. He knew how fragile an agents state of mind could be, especially after witnessing something horrific. Now he was wondering if the sick leave had more to do with Martin somehow than being sick. Had he affected her more than anyone realized?
“Just butt out, Danny!” She was done talking about it and wanted him to be done as well. Her eyes were wide and her blood seemed to be boiling as she stared at him. Her face was red and her breathing heavier, feeling about ready to pummel him if he asked another question.

Danny really can't take a hint, can he? I mean curiosity is one thing but he's being downright nosey! I hope something bad hasn't happened to Martin. If they started digging into his past, I think they'd find out way more than they expected as far as his connection with Sam goes.
Great update

Ch. 3 was another really wonderful one. I love the way Martin tries his very best to keep Sam at ease. And how he is so thankful for the greatest gift she could ever have given him, and the way he lights up speaking about Noah. Wonderful.
Oh, the kiss did surprise me a little. Glad Sam considered it soothing though.

Aw poor Sam, everything seems to be coming back to haunt her doesn't it; and Danny really isn't helping not that he could even begin to realise the whole situation. I hope soemthing's not wrong with Martin/Noah and that's why he's late ? :S Update soon
