I have been watching WAT from the start again and right from the word go there was a real attraction between Sam and Martin. When one of the first scenes together she says to Danny "not a bad smile either" and at the end of episode 2 of the first series there is flirting there aswell when sam says "I here you got a bit wet". It was subtle at that stage, but it was definitely there. The writers built it up over the next two series until no 3 where they got it together, but they should never have broken up. In season 4 they didn't do nearly enough between Sam and Martin and they should have done a lot more.
Even in Season 1 where Sam and Jack on episode 21 where he says to her it's over. At least that was a form of closure betwewn Sam and Jack. Ok, there is still a strong relationship there, but I after seeing that again I realistically don't think the writers would have put them together again. It would have ruined the show. They have never done this with Sam and Martin. I mean they have never talked together about what happened, about their feelings, about why they broke up and there has been no closure.
I think in Season 5 they need to do this. The writers need to bring in the flirting, attraction and fireworks between them again. So even if they don't get back together they might have a closure on it. I know in Season 4 there were tiny little bits of flirting between Sam and Martin, but not enough. You don't go from an intense relationship that they had between them to not talk about it or mention it. That is where the writers got it wrong. I hear that there is rumours that they do get back together and I think my friend said she heard Poppy letting it slip that her past comes back to make it difficult for her and she finds solace and support from Martin and that is how there relationship starts again. Being friends and supporting each other and developing from there. I hope my friend is right. That would be the best way for them to get back together. I missed the real flirting between them and I hope it comes back in Season 5.
In the British press at the moment, with Season 4 starting on Channel 4 here, they are indicating that Sam and Danny were getting closer. I really don't think that is the case and he is very much hung up on Elena. There is real rumours that the writers are hinting towards bringing the relationship between Elena & Danny to the forefront of season 5. I hope the writers work on all the characters and develop a more deeper and classier show this time round.
What does anyone else think?

Well from what I can tell from the spoilers from Season 5 so far there isn't much MS or relationship stuff at all. They have a little bit of Jack/Anne and a little bit of Danny/Elena stuff but other than that it looks as if Season 5 might be a repeat of Season 4...I really hope not!
I think Martin/Sam need something. The relationship ended abruptly and then the shooting happened and there seemed to be something there for about two episodes. From then on there was about 5 scenes of M/S and that was it. I am just hoping for something...anything! I really hope they do not continue w/ the season 4 format.

there definetely lacks some kind of talking between them. I would like if they show us a flashback explaining how they cleared some air after the shooting etc. and then develop the relationship further in season 5...

So far there is barely NO interaction between Martin and Sam. At least from the sides there is no personal moments between them. If you're right (and I hope you are for the sake of my sanity) then it will gradually takes place on the season and maybe by mid season we will see some strong relationship between the (friendship).
There is still many things linger in the air between those two but at the same time they still have to deal with personal problems, Martin being the most obvious one. I don't think Sam will openly address these issues unless she needs it and Martin is too busy dealing with his only problems to bring the ghosts from the past between them. I think they imply on Safe that a few scars were mended, but Patient X (and teh look) showed that there is some things left unsaid between them.
So yeah, something needs to happen to bring a few things they started but never fully developed. I think they do missed the opportunity to address MS relationship in Patient X. I also think they lacked development after the shooting and maybe they should bring somehow the problems and the distance that existed between the team after the incident. Plus Elena must be just a supporting character because she don't bring to her a baggage the team have and still have to work with. Jack really distance himself from the team and his problems don't add anything.
The list of problems is big and I don't really know how personal the writers will get this season not only because there is NO WAT publicity (and I'm not a mind reader so how am I suppose to know the plots of this season if no one talks about it), but because we don't really know about the new write executive producer. We could expect something from Hank from previous interviews but we have nothing on the new guy.
I just hope this season is good, I'm not holding my breath but I still have hope.

Actually I think that the breakup was not the worst thing to happen... okay this may sound really weird coming from a true smarty, but I think the scene where Martin told her he didn't want to do it anymore was one of the strongest there ever was on WaT... It showed what both of them felt at that time and I think it was very intense and actually I had the feeling that their relationship was heading there since...well the middle of the season.
BUT (and here is the but you've probably been waiting for) I think there should have been something that lets see what they really mean to each other. When Sam talks to the unconcious Martin I had the feeling that she really does love him and I always thought that he did anyway. He was only frustrated, because nothing worked the way he wanted it to. And then in the whole season 4 they don't pick up on that!!!!!!! I think this is really sad, because there still is so much potential with this whole breakup, getting shot story and they just let it pass!
Now we got the addiction storyline and it doesn't seem that the writers show any consideration for that either. I mean Sam was really worried and actually the only one whom Martin really listened to. Instead we got Elena/Danny and Jack/Anne... That just isn't like Marty/Sam!!! So I really really really hope there will be something, anything, in season 5!

We got major screwed on season 4. I actually liked the break up scene and more than that LOVED the cold shower Samantha gave on Martin, the tension was right (not because I'm a bitch but because it was very telling the fact she was such a cold hard bitch on him). The season 4 started right, but went downhill.

It won't bug me if we see Smarty or not in the 5th season. I mean look at CSI , it took them a whole SIX SEASONS ( over 100 episodes) to get to the bubbling sexual tension (That's what I'm calling it ) between Grissom and Sara. I think that they've put Martin and Samantha's relationship to rest for now, but we will eventually see more.

I think you are all right. I don't think the writers have really dealt deep enough with any of the characters in the fourth series and that is probably one of the biggest let downs. Hopefully, they will get it right this time. Maybe the writers are just playing with us viewers and it will come in time, butnot to hope for it soon. I don't maybe.
I know that the cases are the biggest thing of the show and what it is all about. but I think the writers need to put more emphasis on the characters and how things develop between them professionally and personally and that way it will keep the viewers coming back to find out what happens between. It will the suspense.

I know in Season 4 there were tiny little bits of flirting between Sam and Martin, but not enough. You don't go from an intense relationship that they had between them to not talk about it or mention it. That is where the writers got it wrong. I think where the writers got it wrong was... the entire 4th season. I've come to the conclusion that the writers are completely inept at handling personal relationships on WaT and it might be best to leave M/S be, if they're just going to massacre it like they did to S4. However, IF they can get back to S1&2 style, then I say go for it! The shipper in me of course, only watches WaT now for the glimmer of hope that resides really, really deep inside. Hee. I'm not sure the writers KNOW how to handle M/S ... but fingers crossed for season 5... And on CSI, there was S/G tension well before the 6th season. And I think Sara and Grissom in the bedroom in sexy robe is a little more than "bubbling sexual tension". That's outright resolved. (Although I don't really watch CSI, I have seen some episodes, mostly from before season 4, and heard about the finale.) *sigh* season 5.....

^^^ Yah I know there was.. what I meant was, They finally decided to something about the ''bubbling sexual tension'' that was and still is (hopefully) between Griss(who is now beardless(or was on the Emmy's)) and Sara
Anyways, I really hope that the writers fix the mess that they've made out of Martin and Samantha's relationship

I really really hope to see them back together by the end of this season, but I won't lie; I don't think it'll happen until season 6 I do think we will see Sam become weak and emotional in this season and I do believe that it will change her for good. It will teach her a lesson or two. I believe Martin will be there for her and help her find her way back. And little by little they'll work things out and end up together. That is how it's got to go.

I really, really hope something happens between MS in season 5, but I'm not holding my breath. Season 4 was just horrible after the first two episodes. One of my biggest pet peeves is that they had Martin thank Danny for helping with his addiction, but they never had him even acknowledge that Sam helped him.
I've been so disappointed by the spoilers that I've seen for the season so far. All I keep reading about in spoilers are Anne and Jack and Danny and Elena. I don't particularly care about either of those women, so I really don't want to spend the whole season watching cases interspersed by scenes of either of those couples. And, unfortunately, if the show is going to have two office romances, I can't imagine that they would have three by putting Sam and Martin back together or even involved very much. I'm going to try to have some hope and watch season 5, but, if I get no MS interaction, I'm not going back for season 6. My patience isn't going to last that long.

I agree and I have and my friends have email on the feedback of the official WAT website and let them know exactly how I felt about season 4 and wishing that they would get Sam and Martin back together. I know that it probably won't make any difference to the writers, but I think it would be really good if we all send the same sort of feedback, comments and requests to them. If they are not careful, they will lose a lot of viewers and they have to at least acknowledge what their viewers are saying about the show. However, I am probably waffling a lot of rubbish and they probably won't care, but if we don't do anything we will never know. Lets get these comments going on their website.
