Disclaimer: Nothing Without a Trace belongs to me. Seriously. No really, I'm not Jerry Bruckheimer. But wouldn't it be cool if I were? Of course then I wouldn't have a need to write this.
Characters: Martin/Samantha
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: I started writing this after Crossroads. I decided to go ahead and post it even thoughI haven't completed it yet, but I plan to this week. I don't usually like to post without completing or getting a beta, but I couldn't find one. So, I thought maybe some of you wonderful people might volunteer. Just PM me. I'm in no way a grammar expert, so, be warned. And this is my first WaT fic. So be gentle. lol
Spoilers: anything up to Crossroads. It takes place right after that episode.
Chapter One
Martin Fitzgerald walked by the window and saw Samantha Spade on the balcony. She looked troubled and he wanted to go to her, the way he had had in the past, but he didn’t feel it was his place anymore. So, Martin kept walking.
“Hey, Martin, have you seen Sam?” Danny asked as he approached Martin.
“Yeah, I saw her outside, on the balcony.” And despite his better judgement he asked “Why?”
Danny smirked at Martin’s question and answered, “She and I have some paperwork to finish. Why do you care?”
“I don’t, ok. I was just wondering why you would be looking for her.”
“Yes, but why would you wonder? It’s not like I’m looking to hook up with her.”
“What? Danny, that wasn’t even in my mind.” And it wasn’t. Danny was a gentle- man and knew the rules of dating. No dating a friend’s ex, especially an ex that said friend still had feelings for. Plus, he wasn’t interested in Sam in that way.
“Ok, just making sure, don’t get all hot and bothered.” Danny was amused by this conversation, but he really did need to finish that paperwork with Sam. So he left Martin with a bemused look on his face and headed for the balcony.

Samantha was standing on the balcony lost in thought when she heard footsteps. She really wanted the owner of those footsteps to be the one who had come to her before when she was distraught. Sam knew it wouldn’t be though and when she heard Danny’s voice, she knew she was right.
“You ok, Sam?”
“Yeah, I just have a lot on my mind. What’s up?” She lied to Danny. She hated lying to him, but she really wasn’t comfortable talking about her problem with him. Besides, she wasn’t really lying, she did have a lot on her mind. She just wasn’t ok.
“Remember the case we just finished?” Sam’s nod told him to continue. “We have to finish up that paperwork and turn it into Jack.”
“Oh right.” They headed back into the building and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Martin walking away. That gave her a little comfort. He still cares.
“Martin.”
Martin was sitting at his desk filing through some papers when he heard his name being called. That voice always seemed to send a chill down his back. It was a voice he knew too well and always had a way of getting his attention.
“Dad, what are you doing here?” He turned to see Victor Fitzgerald standing behind him. Victor wasn’t the type to just pop in unannounced. Of course, he wasn’t the social type so he knew his father was there on business. He was the Director after all.
“Hello, to you too, son. I’m here in an official capacity.” As if Martin might think, he was there for any other reason. Nope, social calls just weren’t his father’s forte.
“Was there any doubt?” He wanted to say, but instead said, “Oh, well what’s the official reason for this visit?”
“I’m doing an investigation of the incident that occurred here last week.”
“Wow, you guys waited a whole week to come down here and question everyone. That’s a record.” Martin and his father always clashed when it came to talking. Which is why they really didn’t make a habit of speaking to each other all the time.
“Martin, it’s my job. Now, have you seen Agent Spade?”
“Why does everyone assume I know where she is?”
“Do you?”
“Yes.” He hated admitting it, but he did know where she was. Only because Danny had let him know. “Danny and Samantha are in the break room. They were doing paperwork and I think they needed a break.” He added the last part because he felt the need to explain to his father why they were in the break room. Why did he have to explain that? It was none of his dad’s business. If someone wants to take a break, they take a break. That’s why they have break rooms, but his dad had that LOOK in his eye when he said they were in the break room. “Thanks. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Sure.” Martin watched his father head in the direction of Danny and Sam. He wished he could have warned them, but there was no time. So Martin went back to his work.
