Thank you for the great pictures and the article. Really very interesting, I never knew there was a NBA Entertainment League. Then again, I am not that much into sports, neither watching nor participating. - Yup, I am a lazy couch potato. ;-)

Tee Hee. I didn't know that his full name was Eric Randolph Close. How precious is that? Hence forth I am going to call him Randolph. ;D When I learned that I thought it was too funny because his youngest brother's name is Randy (short for what? ), and his name has the same phonics than his wife's name... Odd, isn't it?

I am guessing that perhaps 'Randolph/Randy' might be a family name, maybe a grandfather or uncle. Eric/Keri, I never thought about how close (tee hee) they are in the way their names are spelt. More trivia, so much fun.

More trivia, so much fun. Yep! Just remove her initial K put in at the end and there you have two Eric's for the price of one! LOLOL

Another Eric's french interview. Sorry for the bad english. All mistakes are mine like usually... This is the firs part. I hope it's comprehensible... www.ecranlarge.com/article-details-8576.php From soap (Santa Barbara) to western (The Magnificent 7) by science-fiction (Dark skies, Taken), Eric Close likes to vary the pleasures in his career on TV begun since more than 15 years already. Since 2002, the actor plays federal agent Martin Fitzgerald in WAT. A very serious part unlike his interpreter, gladly jovial but who keeps his feet on earth in front of the immense success that meets the show since its beginnings. Interview collects during the 47th Festival of Television of Monte-Carlo (June 2007). How began the WAT's adventure for you ? I wanted to be part of the show as soon as the reading of the pilot's script. CBS and Warner with witch I already have worked before were OK and I had the final green light right after my meeting with Jerry Bruckheimer (executive producer, NDR). Do you remember your very first day of filming ? Let me think a minute (silence). Ah yes, I remember. In the pilot, Jack (Malone, played by Anthony LaPaglia, NDLR) introduced me as a new agent to the rest of the team and later in the episode, I have to catch this guy and we're both landing in a lack. It was so disgusting that I said to my stand-in for the stunts : « You go on, deep in the water because there's no way I go !» (laughs). What about your training for the role ? I read some books on FBI and go to the HQ with our consultant. I also learn how to properly manipulate an arm, to enter in a apartment, to secure a crime scene and more generally, to be on my guard towards my surrounding. At a such point that this last aspect is leaving a mark on me in my private life. (laughs). Precisely, after five seasons in playing the same character, isn't it hard to distinguished work and private life ? Not for me. I manage without problem to dissociate the two. I was married well before the beginning of the show and father of two children. So I'm glad to meet again my family after work. I also like travelling, playing tennis and golf. The only hard period was during the 4th season when Martin takes drugs. The emotional load was so high that I had more difficulties to dissociate the both things at this time. Shooting is in LA but are you going sometimes in New York where the show takes place ? We're going to NY twice a year. And 2 years ago, Anthony (LaPaglia, the actor playing Jack Malone, NDLR) went in Japan for one episode. The show is about a FBI's agent’s team but what about the actors behind the scenes ? We're good friends, we go out often together and take care of each other. There's no ego problem between us contrary to what can happen on others shows. How went the arrival of Roselyn Sanchez in the team at the 4th season ? Wonderfully. At last for me if you see what I mean (big knowing smile ). Beyond her great beauty, she's working hard and integrated herself without any problem to the rest of the team. Did Hank Steinberg's departure ( show creator) last season changes something for you ? I like a lot the risks Hank took regarding the intrigues like by example the episode Malone v. Malone (3.10) concerning Jack's divorce or John Michaels (3.22) where Jack dreams that he's very old. I hope too see more humour. Not a lot but just what we need to allow the characters to unwind a little from their job. And also more situations of conflict between them like in the firsts seasons where Jack and Martin were often in opposition by example. How much long do you want to stay in the show ? As long as possible. I made a lot of friends on this show, I also made my firsts steps as director last season and I'm going to do it again next year. So I stay. What was the trigger that at last decided you to cross the step toward directing ? I always had the desire to direct and the show was the perfect place since I know very well the actors, the writers and the directors. Were you on the asking side towards the producers ? I already have express this desire as soon as the pilot and, after that, I regularly go back on this subject. I passed a lot of time observing the directors on the show and on the cutting room. I worked a lot all the directing’s aspects. And they finally agreed by seeing my determination. Isn't it difficult to act and direct at he same time ? I thought so before to launch myself but finally, everything went well. Except one scene with the steady cam which go from Poppy to Roselyn who get out of the elevator, come to their desks then come to my direction and pin something on the board, all that in an only plan. I was satisfied by the result at the first take. But after the checking, they found out a hair on the camera. And then we had to do it eleven times to succeed in remake it. What’s “infuriating” is that the first take was the good one and was used in the final cut. These things happen and the experience was nevertheless very enriching for me at the end. To be continued...

i think it's interesting the actors are aware of the changes caused by Hank leaving the show - like the personal sgtuff just vanishing. Man, I wish they did something about it.

Here the end...Mistakes are still mine ! ;D
What did you learn about how to direct an actor by directing this episode ? That an actor feels so much more in confidence than you carefully prepared your work in upstream and know exactly what you want. Or at least give them the illusion that you know what you’re doing (laughs). You also have to have confidence in other team members and also to your intuition. The shooting rhythm is so intense that you don't have the time to think. You have to make the decisions and go on. Is it difficult to succeed in making his character evolved regarding this frantic rhythm ? What I like about television is that you have to accept the fact that if the show has the chance to stay on during several years, your character will evolved by himself, like in the real life where you don't know where you'll be in 5 years. Everything don't need to happen in one single episode. Are you allowed to suggest some things to the writers ?
Yes. I talked a lot with them during the episodes where my character was become addicted to drogues. I also suggested to instil a little bit of romance into Martin's life. But writing is within their competence and I generally let them do what they want. Considering the show’s success, aren’t you afraid of being « typecast » afterward ?
The situation is maybe more frequent for shows very oriented on characters like Seinfeld or Friends. In our case, protagonists have of course their importance but it’s the investigation which is in the foreground. You don’t watch the Martin Fitzgerald’s Show, you’re watching Without a trace. The fact that the plot is like this in the foreground, isn’t it a little bit frustrating regarding the character’s evolution ?
Once again, as soon as the show meet success, you know that with a little bit of luck you’re launched for several years and you just have to wait your turn. But I indeed recognize that it sometimes can be a little bit frustrating. In 2004, you get a group nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. What does means the more to your eyes : this kind of distinctions or the show’s popularity ?
Both (laughs). The success is good, awards are just bonus. We simply do the best work as possible without expressly trying to get an award. Do you sometimes ask writers to shoot your character in order to take vacations ? ( reference to the first episode of the 4th season )
No (laughs). If I need holidays, I just have to ask like, by example, during the annual golf tournament at Pebble Beach In California in which I take part and which is during shooting time. Is it the reason why we don’t see you almost anymore in some episodes ? Completly. I left to play golf (laughs). No, more seriously, there’s no link. If you had to describe your character in one word, which would it be ?
Hopeful. From all the characters you already have play on TV, do you have some preferences ?
I love them all for different reasons : Dark Skies for its re-reading of the History at the sci-fi manner, Now and again for the kinds mixte (comedy, drama, action) and where I worked with Dennis Haysbert, and now Without a trace for the wealth of the intrigues to which ones the viewers are sensitive and for the show’s longevity. But after that, I probably wouldn’t have the desire to play an FBI’s agent for a long time (laughs). Do you already have special cravings for the continuation of your career ?
I would like to interpret a doctor, a cowboy, playing in a romantic comedy. Whatever in fact. So you should have loved to be part on Deadwood ?
Of course, it's an excellent show. Like Dexter in which I can se me participated. What other shows do you love to watch ?
CSI : Las Vegas, Curb your enthusiasm, House MD. END
