Chapter 42:
They said their goodbyes to Jack the next morning as he took the rental car with him back to the airport. Thankfully the bureau had provided them with their own vehicle. It wasn’t much as was the house but it was Hawaii and they were grateful to be safe and together as a family.
“Now what are we going to do?” Olivia asked watching Jack drive off from the window. She glanced back at her mom and Martin.
“Find jobs, make friends, this is our new life sweetie. You start school on Monday.” Samantha reminded her daughter. The paperwork had already been completed and she was enrolled.
“School?” Olivia made a face. “Do I have to?”
“Yes,” Samantha nodded. “I’m sorry but I’m not homeschooling you.” There was no way she’d trust herself to give her daughter the best education possible.
“What if everyone at school asks about me?” Olivia couldn’t help but feel nervous.
“You tell them what we talked about. Your name is Olivia Dunham. I’m Samantha Dunham and this is Martin Dunham.” It was always best to keep the first names the same. That way if anyone ever recognized them, called them by first name, on instinct was to turn around. There’d be no stupid small mistakes made.
“That’s a dumb last name,” Olivia made a face.
“Well you don’t get a say in what it is,” Martin smiled weakly, “do you remember where we moved from?”
“Omaha,” Olivia made another face.
“That’s right,” Samantha laughed. “There’s lots of corn in Omaha and where is the city of Omaha located?”
“Nebraska.” Olivia nodded. She’d been good at geography in school. “The capital of Nebraska is Lincoln.”
“That’s right,” Martin nodded quite proud of her as well. It was the little things that could get them caught and under suspicions. “Why did we move?”
Olivia stared at Martin, “because who doesn’t love warm weather year round?” She smiled cheekily. “Mom hates the cold and you promised to make her happy year round.”
“Cute,” Samantha laughed. “Did you teach her that?” She glanced at Martin with a knowing look.
“I didn’t have to apparently she’s a genius,” Martin grinned.
“You hear that mom, I’m a genius!” Olivia bounced around their house, “I’m bored!”
“Me too,” Martin glanced at Samantha. “We should go do something, enjoy the nice weather as it’s the middle of winter.”
“It will always be nice weather here,” she smiled at Martin. “We need to go shopping.”
“I know we need groceries,” Martin nodded, “I was thinking we go swimming, lay out on the beach.”
“With what swim clothes?” Samantha shook her head. “We are not skinny dipping. We need to stop somewhere to pick up a few essentials until our clothes and things come.”
“It could be a few weeks,” Martin knew the FBI was sending their important possessions but it would take time for it to travel overseas. “Shopping it is,” he sighed not entirely thrilled, “but after we’re going swimming.”
“What’s skinny dipping?” Olivia asked glancing at her mom. “Is that swimming in your underwear?” She knew they didn’t have any clean clothes.
“It’s swimming naked,” Samantha told her daughter, “it’s not something you should ever do.”
“So are we going?” Martin eyed Samantha.
“To the store,” Samantha agreed, “we should probably hold off on swimming. Maybe next weekend?” She glanced at him, considering it during the week, just the two of them but wasn’t sure letting Olivia know would be fair to her either.
“Awww but mom!” Olivia whined rolling her eyes. “Please can we go down to the beach?”
“I promise if the weather is as beautiful next Saturday as it is today I will take you swimming.” Samantha nodded.
“We’ll take you swimming,” Martin agreed, “but your mom is right,” he hated that Samantha had to be the sensible one. “We need groceries and could use some new clean clothes.”
“Can I at least get some toys?” Olivia asked glancing between the two of them. “There’s nothing to play with here.” She was growing restless.
“One or two,” Samantha nodded knowing they had enough money for awhile to live off but they’d need jobs. Of course the FBI had ways of transferring money from accounts and they’d put both Martin and Samantha’s into a joint account for their new identity. They also provided them with a stipend for their living expenses at least for a month and longer if necessary.
Martin leaned against Samantha, “you could take her swimming if you want, I could do the grocery shopping?” He could see Olivia going out of her mind and wanted to help any way he could. Besides he thought it might be good for Samantha to relax.
“We still need clothes,” Samantha pointed out.
“That’s a five minute trip and there’s a bathroom on the beach to get changed, Sam.” He stared at her. “Take Olivia to the beach, for me?”
Olivia stared at their quiet exchange, “what are you two whispering about?” She hated secrets at least the ones not involving her!
“Marty wants me to take you swimming while he does the grocery shopping.” Samantha glanced at Olivia. “Would you rather spend the day with Marty and pick out a toy or the two of us could go down to the beach for the afternoon?”
“The beach!” It took no time for Olivia to think it through. “Will you get me a new teddy bear Marty, please?” She was still so attached to the one he’d given her before but she wanted something in the meantime to cuddle in her new bed. Certainly she’d heard Victor on the phone with Jack, insisting to take all her toys and things but she wasn’t sure Jack would do anything to help her. They never saw eye to eye.
“If that’s what you want and you trust me picking it out,” Martin smiled with a nod. “I’d be happy to get one for you. Any other toys though, you have to come and pick out.”
“That’s all I want,” Olivia shook her head. She’d deal with being bored. There was a television and her mom already told her she’d have school during the weekdays.
“Good then it’s settled.” Samantha smiled quite relieved to hear she and Olivia would be going swimming. Though she wasn’t certain she felt comfortable getting into a bathing suit right now, just lying on the beach soaking up the rays was putting a smile on her face.
Martin drove Samantha and Olivia down to one of the shops near the beach. Purchasing a few beach towels, swimsuits and suntan lotion he dropped the girls off, telling them he’d be back in a few hours. Honestly Samantha didn’t care when he came back, just getting away was good for her. She felt happier already.
Samantha carried their things into the bathroom, giving Olivia her swimsuit as she let her change in one of the stalls. Samantha changed in the other, putting on the swimsuit but wearing a coverup. She didn’t want anyone staring at her. She’d do anything to keep others eyes off her, if at all possible.
“Are you done Mom?” Olivia asked banging on the stall her mom was in.
“Yeah,” Samantha opened the door coming out, carrying their clothes and handing Olivia her beach towel. “Come on, let’s go have some fun.”
“Finally!” Olivia grinned, quite relieved it was time.
Together they walked out onto the beach, Samantha taking her shoes off and feeling her feet sinking into the warm sand. It was heaven! “Are you having fun?” She asked her daughter seeing the bright smile on her face.
Samantha found a perfect spot on the sand and she put both towels down along with their clothes, having a seat. “Come here,” Samantha gestured grabbing the bottle of suntan lotion.
“I’m fine mom,” Olivia rolled her eyes.
“No, you’re not.” Samantha knew better, Olivia had the same freckled skin. “As soon as it’s on and dry you can go into the water.”
“You’re coming in with me, right?” Olivia’s eyes were wide. They never went to the beach. Sure she’d been to the pool but she always kept out of the deep end. The waves looked intimidating.
“If you would feel better,” Samantha nodded finishing putting lotion on her daughter and then doing her own. Her back was covered by what she was wearing and all she needed to really do was her own arms and legs.
“Are you ready yet?” Olivia was becoming impatient. “Come on, Mom.”
“I’m ready,” Samantha stood up, glancing back at their things. There was nothing valuable to be stolen and not too many people on the beach, surprisingly. Though no life guards were around, that could have been the reason why? Samantha didn’t dwell on it. It was nice to be in a rather secluded part of town. For a moment it felt like their own private island—if only.
Olivia ran into the water, screaming and laughing as she felt the cold hit her body and stop her. She shrieked, not expecting the water to be cold but the air was warm and soon it no longer bothered her.
Samantha followed into the ocean, seeing the small waves as the rocks further out blocked the strong ones from assaulting them. She smiled glancing around seeing the lava carved into the ground, it was incredible.
“Mom, look!” Olivia’s eyes widened as she saw a sea turtle not too far away. Olivia began swimming towards it but the sea turtle took off beneath the water swimming deeper and further down the shore.
“Olivia, stay with me please.” The last thing Samantha wanted was to lose her daughter. Certainly Olivia could swim, as could Samantha but they needed to stay near the shoreline close to their things. Martin would be back in a few hours time. She didn’t want to miss him.
They said their goodbyes to Jack the next morning as he took the rental car with him back to the airport. Thankfully the bureau had provided them with their own vehicle. It wasn’t much as was the house but it was Hawaii and they were grateful to be safe and together as a family.
