Chapter 01 - Asking
~*~
Martin sat at his desk, his phone attached to his ear and the female voice on the other end incessantly irritating.
The call started out the same as always: they caught up on the latest happenings in the other’s lives, including family, work and other mutual friends; they laughed over some good old times and shared information on other mutual friends. It was the typical conversation they had together. Short and sweet was usually never an option.
Unfortunately today, Martin did not have that luxury.
“Look I’m really busy with work for the moment. I don’t think it’ll work out,” he admitted into the phone, sighing heavily when she continued to talk. Danny walked over with a notepad in hand, motioning to it. But Martin shook his head and pointed to the phone, so his colleague perched himself on Martin’s desk, waiting. Lunch orders had to be taken and Martin for one was starving. “All right, okay, I’ll let her know and we’ll try to be there, but remember, if we have to cancel, it’s for a good reason.” He laughed at her reply and nodded. “You have the mouth of a sailor, Penny, you should control that thing… okay I better go.” He nodded. “Yeah, see you Saturday.”
He hung up the phone and ran a hand down his face. His phone had been ringing and he answered it, expecting it to be a quick call about a case or someone returning a message he’d left. He was due to go out with Danny to grab the team’s lunch. But no, his friend Penny had to be on the other end and in a mood to chat.
It was frustrating that was for sure, but at least now, he was free.
A broad smile was on Danny’s face as he swung his legs over the desk, back and forth. “Now who is Penny, how bad is her sailor mouth and when can I meet her?”
“Penny is a friend of mine from college, and sorry but she’s taken,” Martin replied.
“What about the potty mouth?”
“For close friends, family and irritating strangers only… actually come to think of it…” He finished the statement with a laugh as Danny rolled his eyes.
Shifting on the desk, Danny played with the notepad in his hands but never looked at it. Martin had his attention now. “So what were you trying to get out of on Saturday night?”
“Going to Penny’s place for dinner to introduce her and her fiancé to my new girlfriend,” Martin explained.
Danny raised his eyebrows curiously. “I didn’t know you were seeing anyone.”
Martin sighed. “I’m not.”
“Ah,” he breathed with a nod, “hence the desperate need for an excuse.”
He nodded and exhaled slowly. “Exactly.”
To Martin’s surprise, rather than laugh and tease him about it, Danny simply shrugged and replied, “Why don’t you pretend?” He met Martin’s confused gaze and gestured with a hand as if it explained what he was talking about. “You know, take a friend? Or someone from here even? It’s only for one dinner and after, if they want to see you both again, just say you broke up. Easy.”
“You know that is actually a good idea,” Martin mused, tapping a finger on his chin as he thought about it. It was a good plan.
Danny smiled triumphantly. “I’m good for more than just my looks you know.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself.” He was so deep in thought he didn’t notice Danny’s glare, but it didn’t matter. “What about who to ask? I mean what woman would want to do that for me?”
“You’re kidding, right?” Martin continued to stare at him, blankly, so Danny opted to move on. “Well it depends, I suppose. What have you told your friends about your “girlfriend”?” He ensured to do the quotation marks with his fingers, seeming to take great pride in this situation.
Martin sighed, embarrassment bringing blush to his cheeks. “Well, I said we met on the job though didn’t specify as to whether it was that she’s a coworker or I bumped into her on the street while chasing bad guys.”
He nodded thinking it over. “Good, keeping it open to stretch the truth if necessary.”
“I also said it’s only a few months into the relationship so we’re still getting used to each other in this situation,” Martin continued.
Again, Danny nodded pointing a finger at his colleague with a smile. “Ooh classic. That gives you room for awkwardness at dinner, go on.”
“There’s not much else really, just that she’s gorgeous, smart, and everything that they know is my type.”
“Lots of room to work with that,” Danny breathed.
Martin looked down at his hands. “Yeah I suppose.”
Danny took a quick look at his watch. “As for who you should ask, I really don’t know, that’s your call.” Samantha walked noisily back into the bullpen receiving a smile from Danny. “Hey Sam.”
“What are you still doing here?” she asked irritably, looking up at him with a frown and looking at her watch. “Are you getting lunch or what?”
“Oh right.” He cringed and jumped off the desk, looking over the list of food to get to remind himself. Martin gave him his own order and watched as Danny turned so his back was to Samantha, and he managed to keep his voice soft so she wouldn’t overhear. “You could ask Sam. She’s your type, right?”
Leaning around and peering at Samantha behind Danny, he thought that possibility over. “I suppose I could.” Would she agree? They were good friends but asking her to do something like this… well aside from feeling like a complete fool, he didn’t want her to think that he was pathetic. He wasn’t. He had a social life and got out like anyone else. But she wouldn’t judge him… right?
“It’s one night man,” Danny breathed, staring at Martin purposefully. “You’ll owe her money or your pride or something in return but if it’ll help you out of this, I’m sure she’ll do it. You’ve got nothing to lose.” He looked the lunch list over again and sighed heavily. “I’ll take care of getting this, and probably be back in a day or two with it all. Man we’re vultures.”
As Danny walked out of the office, Martin called after him, “Most of it is yours.”
Soon, Danny was out of sight, leaving only Martin and Samantha in the bullpen. She was standing at her desk, thumbing through some files, deeply engrossed in her work. He was nervous. He wanted to get his friends out of his hair, namely Penny, but at the expense of a good friend and colleague? Was that right? Would she laugh at him or go along with it?
Pushing himself out of his chair, he slowly walked towards her. It was now or never. He trusted her the most so if she turned him down, he’d have to try desperately to think of the next person who he could ask. That would take a lot of thought. “Hey,” he breathed as he approached her.
“Hey,” she replied, looking up and letting a smile cross her face when she didn’t see Danny with him. Lucky for Danny too. “Are you as hungry as me?”
Martin nodded. “Usually more so.”
“Right, stupid question, what was I thinking?” she quipped with a chuckle.
He laughed too, shoving his hands in his pants pockets and having a quick look around them. No agents were in earshot. Now or never. “Can I ask you something?”
She looked at him again with those intense brown eyes. “You’re not Danny so yes. What’s up?”
“I have this dinner on Saturday night at a friend’s house, and unfortunately I’ve been caught in a lie,” he explained.
Her jaw dropped in mock shock. “No.”
“Yeah yeah,” he breathed, rolling his eyes, “anyway, I told them I’m seeing someone.”
The smile slowly fell from her face as she nodded. “I didn’t know you were seeing anyone.”
Martin felt even more like an idiot. “That’s the lie part.” He sighed. “So I was hoping to ask a huge favor of you.”
“Even my supreme powers can’t fix this for you,” she replied, her smile growing again.
He laughed with a nod. “Actually I think you can. What are you doing Saturday night?”
“Um… nothing.” Her brow furrowed as she watched him. He felt like a bug under a microscope, laid out there for the whole world to see. She was the scientist in this case.
“Would you like to accompany me to my friend’s place for dinner as my fake date?” he asked in one long, rushed breath. This was high school all over again.
She looked around them quickly, waiting to see if this was a joke on her. But no one else was around or paying attention to them. “Really?” She chuckled nervously. “What have you told them about your “girlfriend”? Anything I should know about? Or live up to?”
“Nothing like that.” He shook his head adamantly feeling his heart hurriedly pumping blood through his body. It was giving him the jitters. “I’ll fill you in on the few details later… if you’re accepting?”
“Well sure.” Her smile grew and he could almost see her getting a little bit excited about this. Was it a good thing? Or should he be scared? “You’ll owe me but it’s no problem. One night, right?”
Of course there had to be a catch, like Danny warned him, but it didn’t matter. He’d do it if it meant getting a couple of people out of his hair for another few months. “One night.”
“I can do that.”
He smiled and let out a relieved breath. “Great. Saturday night, I’ll pick you up at 6.30.”
Samantha nodded. “Okay, I look forward to it.” She scooped up some files from her desk and rested them against her hip. Her hair was golden in the sunlight shining through the windows and if at all possible, she looked even happier than five minutes earlier. “You know I was in the drama club at high school?”
“Really?” He felt his smile grow. Maybe this could work?
But Samantha laughed and shook her head. “No.” She turned on her heels and sauntered towards the hallway, a skip most certainly in her step.
“Thanks for that.” He now felt overwhelming dread that this was all going to blow up in his face, but he walked back to his desk with a smile nonetheless.
