Thanks for all your feedback! I'm nowhere near done writing this fic but I have managed to write quite a few chapters ahead. I've been inspired lately hopefully I can keep up writing to continue updating like I've been! Chapter 6: You're the best And yes I do regret How I could let myself Let you go Now the lesson's learned I touched it I was burned Oh I think you should knowSitting at her desk, Samantha rummaged through a filing box filled with past cases. She wasn’t sure how they’d relate to their current missing person but Jack had told her she needed to go through them and she wasn’t about to put up a fight. She was much too tired and on the verge of being cranky. If she didn’t do the paperwork, he’d probably send her out into the field with him and she wasn’t feeling up to that, not today. Her head was sore, her back ached and she had no idea why. Hopefully she wasn’t coming down with a cold or the flu. It’d been a rough week, with the tough caseload and the amount of missing people they’d found dead, she could really use a break. Feeling a hand on her shoulder she sighed, closing her eyes. “Not now, please.” The last thing she wanted was Jack hitting on her in the office. Or honestly even showing any hint of affection. He was still her boss, even if he wasn’t married. “Is this a bad time?” Her body tensed, wondering if this was someone’s sick joke or her head playing tricks on her. She hadn’t slept much the last few nights and right now she wondered if she were in fact hallucinating. She hesitated in turning around but the hand never left her shoulder. “Sam?” Finally she did, staring face to face with him. “Martin?” She still couldn’t believe it was him. “What are you doing here?” Her breath caught in her throat, feeling for a moment as if she’d hyperventilate. “Didn’t you get my postcard?” He smiled moving his hand from her shoulder staring intently at her. It’d been too long! “Yeah, six months ago. It didn’t exactly say you were coming or when.” She laughed nervously. Her mind was racing her heart was racing. There was so much she wanted to say, to do over. Was this even real? “I had to be careful, not to mix work with my life back here,” Martin nodded. “I’m sorry it’s been so long.” “Yeah, me too.” Samantha bit down on her bottom lip letting out a heavy sigh. “How are you doing? How have you been?” She didn’t even know the right question to ask or where to start. “I’m doing good. I’ve decided to move back to the states, New York to be specific.” Martin smiled gauging her reaction, hoping it’d be a good one. Samantha merely nodded, soaking the information in like a sponge. She still couldn’t believe he was standing there, in the flesh after five and a half years! It had been too long. Martin smiled, “you’re quiet. Busy day?” He guessed seeing the mound of papers on her desk and the file box she’d been sorting through. “Yeah it’s been a bad week and I’m just speechless that you’re here. You do realize how much time has passed.” Samantha wondered if he knew it hadn’t been a year or two. Being deep undercover could change a person, she hoped it hadn’t messed with him too much. “I’m sorry I couldn’t come sooner. This is my first trip back. I swear. You can ask Jamie or anyone else in the family.” “I believe you,” it was strange, even after all the time that passed, staring into his eyes she felt as though he were being honest and she trusted him almost implicitly. “You grew some scruff,” she gestured towards his facial hair. She knew it was pointing out the obvious but she really felt stunned he was here. “Yeah and I grew my hair out a bit too.” It was scraggly looking, longer then she’d ever seen it and the ends were curling. He needed a haircut. “I’m afraid to ask what they had you doing.” Samantha stared at him, “I know, you can’t tell me even if you wanted to.” She smiled weakly. “I’d say you look good but I liked the old Martin look better.” “I barely remember the old look. You though, you haven’t changed. You’re as beautiful as you were the day I left.” “You flatter me,” Samantha smiled weakly. “Though I’m not sure why.” There had to be a reason he was here. “How’s Olivia doing?” The smile grew on her face. She loved talking about her daughter and was quite surprised he hadn’t forgotten about her or her name even. “She’s great. Seven now and quite the talker. She wants to be an FBI Agent when she grows up.” Samantha pulled a photograph out from her purse. “She is the splitting image of you, Sam.” The freckles had come out more over the years in Olivia’s cheeks and her hair was the same shade. The eyes too, it was uncanny how much they looked alike, even for mother and daughter. “That’s what everyone says.” Samantha laughed, nodding slowly. “She’s doing great. Excellent in school, she’s smart, wants to learn everything she can so she can be just like her mom. I tell her there’s better options out there but she’s seven.” “That’s sweet,” Martin smiled, “endearing actually.” His eyes caught on to her left finger, the smile faded from his face as his eyes noticed the glimmer of a gold band. This was the last thing he expected upon seeing her.

OMG! Why's she wearing a ring on her finger? Surely it's just something to keep men from asking her out... She's not married. Is she? Oh no! I can't wait for the next chapter. I need some explanations. Update soon ;D

So has another six months passed? I noticed she said that she got his postcard six months ago, so that means this is six months later. It has to be. Who gave her the ring? If she's married to you-know-who, I'll throw up and then curse for an hour until my throat is red raw, and don't think I won't! It's good that Martin's back and they're talking like civilized adults, but still, that last little bit got me!
You better update soon hun!

Chapter 7:
Cause when I'm with him I am thinking of you Thinking of you What you would do if You were the one Who was spending the night Oh I wish that I Was looking into your eyes Looking into your eyes Looking into your eyes Oh won't you walk through And bust in the door And take me away Oh no more mistakes Cause in your eyes I'd like to stay...
“You’re married now,” he can’t help but state the obvious fact upon seeing the gold band nestled tight to her ring finger.
“It’s not what you think.” She tries to answer quicker than his question comes out but she isn’t able to beat him to it.
“It’s not working?” Martin tried to understand, “engaged?” he shook his head unable to read her face. “You just don’t want to talk about it.” He knew that side of Samantha had to still exist.
“I think it’s best not talked about here.” Samantha stared at Martin seriously.
“You’re right,” he nodded knowing she’d always been private at work and he didn’t have that right anymore to make her open up. Least of all here. “I actually came by for a reason. I was hoping you’d have dinner with me tonight. It’s Friday and I know it’s last minute notice but I was thinking the three of us—you, me, and Olivia could enjoy dinner together.”
“I’d prefer to get a babysitter. Olivia’s seven now. Trust me, it’s not as though we can talk around her these days.”
“I’d like to see her, Sam. You’re welcome to bring her out to dinner.”
Sighing Samantha couldn’t help but feel apprehensive about the whole ordeal. “I haven’t seen you in years, I just, I don’t want her to get hurt.”
“I’m not here to hurt you or Olivia,” Martin admitted. “I really am planning on moving back to New York.”
“I’m not sure I see the point now,” she was a bit snappy. Grimacing she knew a fight was the last thing she wanted. Martin was here, he was back. This was supposed to be the best moment in her life. Except it was happening too many years too late. “I’m sorry. It’s been an awful week. Dinner tonight would be nice. You can come by my apartment, meet Olivia before the two of us go out.”
“Sounds good,” Martin nodded, hoping dinner would be a nice night and not like the many fights they shared over the years before Olivia was around. “I’ll let you get back to work.”
“Thanks,” Samantha smiled weakly. “What time are you coming by tonight?”
“You tell me.” Martin stared at her, leaving it up to her. She was the one that had to work and needed to schedule a babysitter.
“Come by at six.”
“I will see you then,” Martin nodded, heading back to the elevator the way he came in.
Sighing, Samantha grabbed the files on her desk, not wanting to get back to her paperwork but knowing full well she had to. She contemplated telling Danny about Martin’s unexpected visit but thought better of it. Danny had always been the overprotective brother she never had. She wasn’t sure bringing Danny into the mix right now would do anyone good.
She was relieved she hadn’t made any plans with Jack for the weekend. Things between them had been strained lately. Of course no more than usual as their relationship was strictly sex and nothing more. She wondered if they stopped having sex if that was like breaking up since it wasn’t a real relationship.
The day seemed to drag on as she grew increasing more restless with each passing minute. She called the sitter, asking her to stay later so that she could go out tonight.
Finishing the case she was relieved to get out at a decent hour, bypassing Jack’s office and hoping he wouldn’t stop and ask her if she was coming by tonight. She didn’t want to admit Martin had paid a visit earlier that morning. She wasn’t sure why it was best kept a secret but she didn’t want to jinx it or chance anything either.
Heading home she was glad to see the sitter helping Olivia with her homework. “You have a date tonight?” Olivia asked with wide and curious eyes. “I thought you weren’t dating Jack?”
“I’m not.” Samantha frowned wondering what the sitter had said. She couldn’t remember telling her anything!
“So who are you going out with?” Olivia asked rather impatiently. “Danny?” It wasn’t as though her mom knew that many men. She was a workaholic and when she wasn’t working she was over Jack’s if not at home.
“He’s going to pick me up in a few minutes. You’ll meet him when he comes to the door.” Samantha didn’t want to get Olivia’s hopes up, just in case she got stood up. She could always lie about who it was later. Samantha headed to the bedroom, unsure what to wear. Was this really a date? She didn’t think it was and dressing up might make her feel stupid and out of place. Wearing her work attire wasn’t all that enjoyable though either.
It didn’t matter. She heard the door and knew he was here. She didn’t have time to do much of anything.
Olivia wasted no time in pulling open the door, staring up at his blue eyes. They were just like his picture she had in her room.“Marty?” Her jaw was practically on the floor.
“Hey Olivia,” Martin smiled watching as she let him come inside. “You remember me?” He was quite surprised and felt his heart flutter at that thought.
Nodding, Olivia stared up at Martin. “Mom!” She wasn’t sure if Marty was Samantha’s date or an unexpected surprise visitor. Either way she had to get her mom in here, now.
“Hey Martin,” Samantha slipped her shoes back on. “You remembered your way.” She wasn’t sure he would.
“I did,” Martin nodded. “Are you almost ready?”
“Mom,” Olivia whined, “you have to let me come. Please?”
“Did you finish your homework?” She asked her daughter glancing at Martin knowing he wouldn’t mind as it was his suggestion initially.
“I did.” Olivia nodded. “Please?” Olivia couldn’t help but bounce on her feet, “I promise I’ll be good. I’ll do extra chores.”
“Get your coat and shoes on,” Samantha nodded. Walking over to the sitter, Samantha paid her as if she’d have watched Olivia anyhow, not wanting to chance the next time needing her, she wouldn’t be available.
Samantha watched the sitter walk out while before glancing behind her seeing Martin ready and Olivia getting her shoes and coat on. “You clean up well.”
“I figured I could use a shave and a haircut.” Martin laughed weakly. He honestly wanted to make a good impression tonight, especially when seeing Olivia. He wasn’t sure she would have remembered who he was. Besides as much as this was a night to catch up, it was also a night of possibilities.
“I’m ready!” Olivia announced, coming up to stand beside Martin at the front door.

Samspade, what the hell have you done??!! Six months ago she was still pining for Martin and now she's wearing a wedding ring? You just better fix this, and fix it right now!!!
And regarding Sam feeling under the weather, that better not be what I'm thinking it is!! Ooh, I'm mad right now!!! (Just in case you didn't notice LOL!!!)
I knew something was up when she didn't even stand up from her chair and give him a hug. Poor, poor Marty! So he's coming back to live in New York? I hope this 'development' doesn't send him straight back to Europe!!!
Wonderful update Samspade, but please post ASAP to put us all out of our misery!!

Great chapter. I hope things go well between the three of them tonight so they can at least get their friendship back.
I hope Sam explains the ring to Martin. I bet he's just as confused as I am about it! Update again soon. ;D

O-kay...So Sam doesn't seem to be married or engaged to Jack. So what's the story with the ring?
Marty was so calm in his reaction. I'm glad he invited Sam and Olivia to dinner and he seemed a little disappointed when Sam thought it would be best if Olivia didn't go with them.
When Sam got home after work, Olivia was just full of questions, wasn't she? Oh, I can just picture her face when she opened the door and Marty was standing there!
She was so excited, I'm glad Sam relented and allowed her to go with them. I can't wait to see how dinner goes!!
Terrific Samspade, terrific!!!

Chapter 8:
“I still don’t understand why you left,” Olivia was blunt and always got right to the point. It was part of being seven and also a hint of Samantha’s own personality shining through in Olivia.
Martin smiled weakly, sipping his water knowing it wouldn’t be easy to explain to Olivia or to Samantha. “Samantha and I,” he paused glancing at Sam. “We dated quite awhile before you were born,” he explained.
“I know about the past, Mom already told me all that.” Olivia nodded. “Why’d you leave?”
“Yeah, why did you leave?” Samantha asked gently, hoping Martin wouldn’t avoid answering the question. She had wondered for years what the hell had happened.
“After the breakup,” Martin sighed glancing at Samantha, “things between us were strained. Do you remember that?” He knew she had to.
Samantha nodded weakly, knowing she was to blame.
“I decided to look at other opportunities for employment. One of those being the CIA. I agreed to a background check, which takes even longer then the ones we had to endure to join the FBI.” Martin smiled weakly. “I honestly thought they decided to hire someone else when I hadn’t heard from them in months. Then they called me. It was very early the morning I packed up my desk, when I told you.”
“You didn’t know the last night we were together?” Samantha couldn’t believe it.
Martin shook his head, “I swear, I had no idea. I don’t know that I would have confessed all that I did, if I’d have known I was leaving.”
“Would you have left either way?” Samantha had always wondered.
“I don’t know. Probably not. Though they did offer me a huge signing bonus. It was hard to turn down. Money aside though,” his eyes wouldn’t leave Sam’s. “I took the job because I couldn’t see you everyday and not want more. I needed space and you wanted time so I thought in a year or two, it would all be figured out.”
“Now here we are, five years later.” She sighed reaching for her glass of water, having a sip. This all felt so overwhelming.
“Mom’s dating her married boss.” Olivia announced, knowing it would piss Samantha off to share it with Martin. She hoped deep down it'd be enough to break them up. Her secret goal for coming along tonight.
“He’s not married,” Samantha shook her head, though not denying her relationship with her boss.
Martin nodded slowly, “Jack?” He could only imagine he was still the boss. He should have known Jack would swoop in while he was gone. Though he took Sam’s word at face value, wanting time to take care of Olivia, bond with her before jumping into a relationship.
“Yeah.”
“Is he the one that gave you the ring?” Martin gestured towards her left hand.
Olivia shook her head, “no. Uncle Danny gave it to her.”
Martin raised a curious eye. “Danny?” He just heard she was dating Jack and Danny gave her what looked like a wedding band. He was getting a headache already.
“He was trying to do me a favor,” Samantha explained. “A few of the guys at work, have been hitting on me. Obviously they didn’t know I was seeing Jack—“
“I didn’t know you were either until Uncle Danny told me.” Olivia made a face, “I don’t like Jack.”
“Me either,” Martin smiled at Olivia. “How long have you two been--?” He tried being subtle with his words, seeing as Olivia was staring at him intently, hanging on to every word he had to say.
“About two years? We don’t go out, it’s not that type of relationship.” Samantha sighed, chewing her bottom lip. She really didn’t like talking about this. “What about you?” It was easier to hear what he had to say about himself.
“Now that’s complicated,” he admitted.
“Well I’m sure in the past five years you had to have dated some?” She knew Martin better than to put his life on hold for her.
“When I arrived in Paris, part of my cover was that I was married to another agent.” He explained. “We lived together, had to play the part and I guess, after time it started to become real to us.”
“You were living together?” Olivia asked with bright and curious eyes.
“The cover was 24/7,” Martin nodded eyeing Samantha knowing she must have known some things had to happen for the job. “Eventually we were no longer pretending and next thing I know, I’m going to be a father.”
“Wow. So you’re a dad.” Samantha was quite shocked. “She’s back in Paris?” Samantha asked, curious about his son or daughter.
“She’s dead,” Martin sighed not wanting to talk about it. Shaking his head, he rubbed at his eyes. “Our son didn’t make it either. The doctors tried to deliver him early but there were too many complications.”
“I’m so sorry, Martin,” Samantha reached across the table, resting her hand over his, in a comforting gesture.
“That’s horrible.” Olivia stared at Martin, completely in shock from the news. Her mouth agape and stomach tumbling rapidly.
“I’m sorry,” Martin shook his head, seeing Olivia’s expression and knowing he shouldn’t have said anything at least not around her. “It was a long time ago.”
“Are the bad people still after you?” Olivia asked, feeling slightly concerned. Her eyes darted around the room nervously.
“No,” Martin smiled, “we’re safe. I promise you have nothing to worry about.” He patted Olivia’s arm.
Samantha let out a sigh, finishing her water, wishing she’d ordered something stronger to drink. “So you’re back in New York?” She knew he’d mentioned it at the office, that he was looking at moving back to the city.
“Trying to get back in the Bureau,” Martin admitted. “It’s tough and even if I had Jack’s recommendation, I’m not sure it would mean much.”
“He does tend to piss people off.” Samantha smiled weakly, “what about your father. Can he pull any strings?”
“I’m sure but I don’t plan on calling him.” Martin shook his head.
Olivia frowned, “I don’t understand.”
“My father works for the FBI.” Martin explained, “he’s the Deputy Director.”
“That’s like my bosses boss,” Samantha offered to Olivia, knowing Victor was a few notches about that but it would only confuse Olivia. “Martin and his father aren’t very close.”
“Like you and Grandma?” Olivia guessed.
“Yes, though I think Martin talks to his father a little more.”
“You never talk to Grandma,” Olivia laughed, lightening up a bit.
Martin smiled at Olivia, “I was never incredibly close with my grandparents either.” He knew it couldn’t have been easy on Olivia but Samantha had her reasons.
“We visit Grandma from time to time.” Samantha smiled glancing at Martin.
“Yes and we see Aunty Emily too.” Olivia nodded. “Have you met Aunty Emily or Grandma?” Olivia asked Martin curiously.
“No,” Martin smiled shaking his head. “Your mom never introduced me to them. She’s met my family though, just like you have.”
“We only met your cousins,” Samantha smiled watching as the waitress brought their meals. She helped cut up Olivia’s.
“You know my father,” he smiled back at Samantha, watching her intently.
“Yes but only through work. Probably best that way.” Sam nodded. “He doesn’t seem like the overly friendly type.”
Martin couldn’t help but laugh, “you still are a great agent. Can’t really put anything past you.”
“Have to be on my toes,” Samantha laughed.
“I don’t get it,” Olivia frowned glancing under the table. “You’re sitting down.”
“It’s an expression,” Sam answered her daughter, patting her arm. “Eat your dinner.”
“I am,” Olivia groaned rolling her eyes. “Can we have dessert too?”
“If you eat the rest of your meal,” Samantha nodded knowing it wouldn’t be difficult for her daughter to do, seeing as it was from the children’s menu.
“Will you come over after dinner?” Olivia asked Martin between bites.
“I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see.” He wasn’t going to invite himself over Samantha’s house. A lot had changed over the years. He knew telling Samantha about Vanessa and their son, might scare her off but he wanted to be honest with her. It was the only way move on. Besides, it was still a shock to hear she was back with Malone. Not that he should have expected any less. Jack probably swooped right in at the first chance he had. He had to give credit to Sam if she spent three years of turning him down.

Wow awesome update, Alot has happened to Martin in 5 years i wonder how Sam felt to hear that Martin met someone else and became a father even though it ended sadly. Sam needs to finish with Jack now Martin is back but i think Sam will put the barriors up with Martin scared that he will hurt her again. I am glad that Sam isn't married. More soon.

I love Olivia!!! I doubt Sam would have gotten so much information out of Martin had it not been for Olivia! She is such a little character.
I loved how she blurted out that Sam was involved with Jack. And butted in with the answer about the ring. (Thanks for putting us out of our misery Samspade!) And was upfront about her dislike of Jack!
So, Martin was involved with someone in Paris and almost became a father. Poor Martin, you can tell he's still carrying a lot of grief. That piece of news shocked both Sam and Olivia.
But the rest of the dinner was wonderful, conversation seemed to flow easily. Loved Olivia's confusion over Sam being 'on her toes' LOL!!
I have high hopes that this will be the first of many 'family' dinners!!!
Wonderful, absolutely wonderful stuff Samspade!!
